I am trying to run a Lionel GP38-2 that is equipped with Legacy in conventional and

get intermittent and garbled sounds while running in conventional.  The instructions

say 'use any AC powered transformer.  I am using a Z4000.  Does lack of the 9v battery

have any affect?  The instructions say it is needed for Legacy only.

Any ideas?

thanks,

bruce

The battery is also for start up and shut down sounds when transformer power is off or low.

Do you have both outside rails connected to common on your layout?

Know anybody with a Legacy or TMCC layout? Try it there and see if it's the same. Ask them to do a reset.

You definitely have to be careful with the high voltage a Z-4000 will put out. It can fry Lionel electronics over 18v.

Any problems with horn and whistle?

This is a nice loco. I had one. I really like the engine sounds and horn in Legacy mode. It was ok in conventional mode.

Listen to this one
