If I recall correctly, the numbers aren't just printed. They are either raised or embossed into the red plastic lens. (I forget which) Plain, blank red number boards are around. I haven't seen the ones with numbers in a long time.

Yep, you sand them down to remove the incorrect numbers and then print the replacements on clear film in the right size and font.  Use clear parts cement to stick them on, and a coat or two of clearcoat, job done.  FWIW, I did a couple of 80's PW diesels, and the numbers were on clear plastic and they were just decals.  They were actually falling off, which is why I had to replace them.

I just checked a spare 8022 shell that I have. It has red number boards with "8022" raised. The "8022" numbers have no coloring on them.

I don't have the whole engine, just the shell.

The number boards are translucent red with the number 8022 on them. These engines ran again in 1971, with the number boards reading 8020 (go figure).  Any help will appreciated.

it sounds like the number boards I need.  The number 8022 is raised on the red translucent board. If you email a picture of the boards, I'd be interested in purchasing them.
