I would say there is an issue with the motor needing to be replaced and or the panto is binding. Those little motors do fail and then they can take out electronics in a big way. Ive seen smoke unit motors fail and completely destroy the MTH PS2 boards and the wire harness an mux board, Remember, when electronic boards fail you need to try to find out why and not just replace the board or you wil wind up with the situation you are in. Id check the motor and the wiring to the motor.

Sorry I saw this late.  If you take the shell off the engine you will see a sprocket gear between 2 worm gears.  The sprocket gear is held down with a screw and washer.  The gear binds if the screw is too tight.  Tighten screw and back of 1/4 to 1/2 turns.  The screw just keeps the gear from falling out.  Also, do not tighten the screws on the ends of the catenary arms that have screws on each side.  Again, just tighten until bottoms out.  If you do this, they should run like melted butter.

Thanks for the reply Alex m fixed it the enhisive wire holder came loose causing the wires to hit the fly wheel shorting the pentagraphs control board
