I have a friend who has a bunch of Marklin Trains from when he was young, but no transformer. Both Lionel and Marklin are 3 rail AC. Could a Lionel transformer be used with out harm to the Marklin Locomotives ? His trains are from the 50 - 60s, not the modern stuff.
I was thinking something like a Lionel 1033 or 1034
Anybody out there have knowledge about Marklin to answer this question.

As I recall, Marklin uses a higher voltage pulse (around 20v?) to activate the reverse unit. Lionel uses power interruption to activate the E-units. So Marklin trains won't be able to change direction using a Lionel transformer.

You could use two 1033 transformers in series to get up to 32 volts on demand if needed.
