I'm split on both, so not taking sides, but do have an interesting comparison.

Last year need a replacement builder plate from MTH for 611 J PS2.  Not a "stock" part, but mentioned it to a guy in the parts area in York - he took my info and about 5 weeks later, I got a pair in the mail.  No cost.

Last night I needed a replacement part from Lionel for an engine of similar vintage.  It was less about $3 online on their parts website.  Small, tiny item, similar.  They wanted $9 shipping.  To make it worthwhile, would have bought some traction tires, but they were marked unavailable. Sent a nice e-mail to Lionel explaining the "issue" (and I understand it's my issue.)  Their answer, essentially "Too Bad.  So Sad.  Pay the $9 shipping for the $3 part".... the ironic part - they told me to fill up my cart with some traction tires to make it worth the shipping.  HA!  Too bad they are "unavailable"....

And sometimes with the "right" part number, the Lionel part is different. Paid ten dollars for a "wrong" part and the only advice was to find someone with New Old Stock. "Musta changed the spec" he said. "Only have one more here and just as wrong as the one you have." But you do not just " change " a part randomly or intentionally when you do not make a newer version of the unit. And if you do, you need to provide the matching pieces to make it work. Have heard so much bull ticky from these " support" guys that I sometimes wonder if they are really girls in India reading a script and digitally disguising there voice. lol Maybe I might try emailing this Mike Reagan guy. Anyone have his email? Some say he is the only one at Lionel who can actually provide an intelligent if not satisfactory response. But it is same story with Rc planes. Some guys buy Chinese stuff and upgrade it to work correctly and charge for that service. And others sell junk cheap with the buyer knowing he till have to fix/ upgrade himself. Seems like Lionel with exception of real expensive stuff, just wants to seek junk for a hefty profit and just make excuses. But what else is new. Been discussed over and over. Sometimes it makes more sense to buy used junk just for the parts than deal with the parts depart at Lionel. Just my opinion.
