I'm not sure this is the right place for this question. Years ago I bought this accessory new in the box and put it away until I could build my layout. I have built the layout and installed the unit in the conventional mode. When I turn it on and place the car in the correct position the led comes on and I hear a click. Nothing else happens. Checking with Lionel they said it could be a lose wire or its jammed. If I return it they cannot guarantee that they can fix it. Does anyone have the wiring diagrams and or any idea what is wrong. Also, what I should be careful about when I take it apart.

It could be a loose contact at a location that is not visible in basic Position.

 

I had a comparable case after some operation and a long time of idling on my layout. In this case the contact was dusty.

 

From my prospective there is no wiring diagram around. To remedy the tipple operation I separated the motor leads from the electronic device and attached them directly to an appropriate DC source. If only the mentionned contact were preventing the operation, the DC source would bridge it and would enable the operation as test.

 

You can operate the motion as far as possible with DC. Take a HO-controller (with rectifier) Then you will see appearing a metal spot for the contact during the rotating Motion. Clean it and test it.

No wiring diagram that I'm aware of.  Mine didn't work out of the box because the left sensor switch was bad.  See my web article about the bypass with dis-assembly tips.   Lionel No. 32910 Rotary Coal Tipple

I'm using posts B/U from a Lionel ZW which when set on 16 volts my voltmeter says 15.5V. I don't like to run accessories at 18V because some of the plastic parts melt from the heat.

That maybe the way to go but I first need to really figure out what is not working.

That posting is of tremendous help and hopefully if everything goes right I can take it apart this weekend and see what the problem is.
