Lionel custom runs for MrMuffin'sTrains
from the 2021V1 Catalog

Based on the email traffic we have received, we have added 5 more Pacific's and a Camelback - we need your orders to get them made. For images, follow the links.

Through our friends at Lionel, we have lined up a number of really terrific custom runs out of the 2021 Volume 1 Catalog.

BTW - a lot of what we are announcing were suggested to us by our customers - so if there's something in the catalog you think we could expand on with a custom run - please let us know.

Yes, Elizabeth, more Monon

Probably the number one thing we have wanted to offer are the Monon Pacific passenger steamers and matching heavyweight passenger cars.

We are offering four Monon 4-6-2 Pacific's. The first one, #444, and the last one, #452, are what we are calling our "street" version and they ran all over the Monon, from Chicago to Louisville, through Carmel and Broad Ripple to Indianapolis. If you were a business person living in the greater Meridian-Kessler area, you would pick up the train just west of the Indiana State Fairgrounds to travel to Chicago as it headed north out of Indianapolis' Union Terminal.

Minimum order quantity by Lionel is 25 pieces, per engine. Four different versions are being offered. Lionel will paint them all in standard Monon livery with the appropriate lettering and road number markings. These engines will include all of the standard Legacy Steam features on pages 6 and 7 of the 2021V1 Catalog, plus whistle steam. They will be 22" in length, and require O54 curves.

So, then the next question - what are these Pacific's going to pull? Well, they pulled heavyweight passenger cars, in Pullman green and a black roof with gold lettering - so Lionel is making these cars for us as well.

These cars are appropriate for these Pacific's, our Lionel custom run 4-6-0 Consolidated (2131580) from the last catalog, and the Previously cataloged Lionel Monon Mikado (2131350) - both are still available to order - plus the MTH custom run Premier Mikado we did a few years back. They'd also be appropriate for the various custom run diesels we offered, like the C420's.  The Monon was cheap - it took a long time to replace these passenger cars.

We are offering these Monon heavyweights as a six car set. The six car set are 18" heavyweights with all of the features of the GM&O cars offered in the 2021V1 catalog, pages 28 and 29. Our six-car set will include: Baggage; Combo; 2 Coaches; Club-Lounge Car and an Observation Car.

These retail from Lionel for $1200. We are offering them for $944.95. Lionel's minimum run for these cars is 100 sets - so I need your orders! We sold 130 of the Monon Red and Gray sets - so we can do this!

Also, using your imagination, what is the possibility of a "Indiana" Pacific using LionChief + 2.0 (could use the current Baby K4 ) tooling? The engine is crazy and beautiful and unique all at the same time. I would purchase a smaller "Indiana" version.

Yes - exactly what I was looking for - before I saw this I received a picture of a #2189 so I think we are going with that one. Interested folks can order either, or both, of the PC's here:

Please find out from Lionel on the driver diameter for these Pacific's. DL&W had four different size's,

1101-1114 had 73" and were freight.

1115-1130 had 79" and were passenger.

1131-1135 had 73" and did both freight and passenger, 1131-1133 had regular pilots, 1134 & 1135 had permanent snow plows.

1136-1140 had 79" and was passenger.

1151-1183 had 69" and were freight.

1184-1193 had 70" and were freight.

The picture you have listed of the 1130 has the single step as delivered, all pacific's got the ladder after first overhaul like this Lionel model. The rear tender headlight was centered on 1131-1135, but I see no tender light in the catalog. The trim was not white but silver, tires and the outside of the ladder from the pilot up to the running board and the edge of the running board back to the cab was also silver. In a picture I have dated 12-26-52 the silver was gone from the 1133. All engine, tender tires and running board were silver as delivered in 1915, only the 1131 & 1132 kept the silver tires and trim till the end in 1952. The front of the smoke box was silver like the ACL in the catalog, not gray or black.

I can email you pictures of every different angle if you would like from all of my DL&W books, of course all credit is to the original photographer.

Hey Steve, I'm curious as to the color of the boiler, whether it is black, gray, graphite, or what ever other colors they could be? I know it is early and it may take a bit to get information on that, but figured I would ask.Screenshot_20210125-230742

Ordered one of the B&O Pacifics as soon as I saw your post.  Thanks so much for doing these!  Lionel has only done a B&O pacific dressed up for specific passenger trains, and the most recent one had the whistle wayyy off.  Was sad to see no B&O pacific offered amongst this latest run from Lionel, but it made my day to see it on your list!

Probably much too late, but if there were any chance you could throw in a B&O GP30 (in "sunburst" scheme if possible, but standard is fine, too) or Chessie, I'd order at least one of each and probably a few.  Chessie was done back in about 2007, and B&O hasn't ever been done in legacy.  Was disappointed to see the B&O and Chessie offered by Lionel only in CSX patched and renumbered.

But again, thank you for putting together this already really cool run of custom units!

P.S., my personal preference is for the look of the B&O Pacifics with the Vanderbilt tenders, but that may just be me.  Don't know if this decision has been set in stone yet, though.

When K-line closed and Weaver Models took that order of Pacific's, the driver size was 73". From what I see in the Lionel catalog, I can't tell if they are 73 or 79. It's 2021, why would they NOT offer a rear tender headlight. If you can get the driver size from Lionel, then I can get you the right road number. I helped Joe get all of the right information when Weaver made the brass Pocono, I can also help with pictures and other DL&W facts if you add the Camelback. I have plenty of pictures on 4-6-0's in my one book. Let me know, I would be happy to help get ANY DL&W engine made as correct as possible.

Okay, first we have had lots of input and terrific help today on the B&O Pacific. Lets change the model we are going to run to #5236 in blue with the Vanderbilt tender. Has gold trim and lettering. Pretty terrific. I really want to make this, so I need to get to 25 - and I will take one - so like 22 to go.

Pete - all I have found out so far is that they're using the same wheels that they used 12 years ago when they last did the Pacific.... any thoughts on that?

Well if you decide to go for it, I can’t imagine it would be too hard to get to the 25 number.  The old TMCC sunburst model is hard to find like hen’s teeth.

And if you needed some pictures of a real one, I’m 15 minutes from the B&O railroad museum where they have one still in operation, number 6944.

Either way, I’m even more ecstatic now about the B&O Pacific!  Will have to talk to some B&O buddies about also ordering one to be sure we get to that 25 number...

Late next week, I need to prune the list with Lionel and confirm what they will make, and then the final count of engines by 2/28.... My thinking right now is if I don't have at least 10 orders for an engine by end of the weekend, I will cancel the project..... focus on what people really want - so get your orders in!
