Hello all-

I purchased a Lionel GE Dash 9 Demonstrator (6-18226) a few days ago and it arrived today. When I placed it on my track, the sounds (Railsounds 2) started up as usual. But, I then tried to get it to move, and it lurched a few inches then stopped (I've tried it in both directions). It made a grinding noise too. I tried lubbing the areas that Lionel says to lube, but that didn't work. The wheels don't move very freely either. Any suggestions on how to fix this? I really don't want to do too much work as I have not dealt with O scale equipment (I've been in HO for a while) before. I am located in Ventura County in Southern California if anyone can direct me to a place closeby (besides Allied's, which I know of) that can fix this if I can't. Thanks so much for reading this and enjoy the rest of your day!

Your Loco's motors and gears need maintenance. It has probably been sitting for 10 years or more AC Pulmor motors are primadonnas, but give them some attention and they run like stars. But first you need to set it up so you can run the loco upside down, off the track. check to see that both motors are running and which is binding. Sometimes just speeding them  up and down for a while will smooth out the motors and free up the gears. The should run at about the same speed or they will fight each other. If you take off the shell you can oil both ends of the armature which should end the loud squealing sound you hear. There is probably hardened grease on the worm gear down in the truck. I usually just squirt some Teflon oil in to free them up. Otherwise you need to take apart the motors to remove the armatures. Test it again with the shell off. Tell me how it goes. Good luck.
