Lionels SD40-2. Wow. The paint is all wrong. Orange instead of red. Take a look at the Lionel E3 from 2004 next to the SD40 just released. Maybe they will offer new shells like they did for the Santa Fe’s they messed up a few years ago

This issue seems to be unending.
Lionel got that color very close to correct, when I lived in FTL I recall seeing these and they were more of a red-orange color. Here is a link to a railpictures.net photo that clearly shows this:
Is it possible the SD40-2 is close to the "right" color ??? Just did a quick Goggle search and most FEC SD40-2's seem to have a red-orange feel to them - just my take
PS - cool looking engine
Thx
Definitely not the same red used on the ES44's. I'm glad I stopped pre ordering before seeing the actual model. I wanted a few of these to go with my FEC ES44's
Lionel has a lot of problems with red. Same with the NS 911. As far as Lionel paint screw ups though, this one isn't too bad.
They must've followed a photo where the sun was really bright on the color.
I also did a Google image search for FEC SD40-2. I think Lionel got it pretty close. I noticed a picture of a Broadway Limited HO model that is very dark. It looks good, but doesn't seem to match the bright red/orange of the prototype photos.
Compare the color with these and you would most likely consider it a close match.

Those photos show a deeper red. The Lionel red is too pink, an issue they continue to have. Look at the ES44's
Those SD40's have a lot more problems than the paint! Hope this is not shades of the future for Lionel.

Bill, I’m lost. Are you talking about the latest run of SD40’s from Lionel having problems? I’m thinking of buying one.

First of all, this model is an SD40-2, not an SD40. Lionel LLC has made both.
Secondly, the MPC-era SD40 is a completely different model from either of Lionel LLC’s recent versions. It wasn’t an accurately scaled model.
So what specifically is the concern with the current run of SD40-2 models Lionel is producing?
Rod, before you order, see one up front in person for yourself. You maybe satisfied with them. I'm not on here to trash Lionel. I actually have bought over $600-700 of Lionel cars in the last few months. I ordered $300 worth of Lionel cars yesterday. I think their PS-1 boxcars are some of the best in the market. I love many of there products, but for me personally, things seem to be sliding with the top end products. From my view point, all the manufactures are cutting corners now. No matter how much fidelity and accuracy we would like, the companies have to make a profit. I hope this clears things up for you. For the record I did not see the SD40-2 run and have no idea what's happening under the shell.

Actually, the current Lionel production makes MPC of the 1970's look GOOD!
Just came across this FEC SD40 thread,.. All I have to say is Florida sun is brutal to any shade of red, which soon becomes something else depending on what color is underneath. My wife likes red cars, when we lived in Florida most looked quite different after a few years.
