I'm getting a Lionel Genset soon and I am curious as to what the diameter of the holes for the ditch lights and rear headlights are. Since I am planning on removing the lenses for the lights and have LEDs sticking out of the shell, to have the lights extremely bright as per the real thing.

I would assume the diameter of the holes are big enough for a 3mm LED to fit through, but I don't know that for a fact. So if someone can can measure the diameter of the holes for those lights, that would be great!

Most cases you may have to add/or enlarge the holes with a drill bit/held in a pin vice.  There are smaller LED's.   Pictured are 3mm Bi-drectional/(2) colors.

This set of Weaver Pennsy E8's, LED's were added.

LED installation/color are subject to criticism.  Color and location may not be proto-typical.

Not sure this is what you want either, but on this genset(6-28355), the lights you are asking about are very close to 3mm.  Difficult to measure, hold ruler and photograph too!

Good enough for me, I believe most of the tooling between the Non-Vision Line and Vision Line Gensets are identical. I'm getting a Non-Vision variant, so what you provided is perfect.
