Why is this engine so hard to find?

Because it is awesome!
Seriously though as one of the few steam engines that a lot of folks have seen it is / was in high demand. IMO it is one of the best Lionel has ever produced. Lionel could easily do another run of these and the scale Polar Express and sell them all day long.
I ordered my engine that day I found out about it.

My LHS had standing orders..."if Lionel makes a Legacy 765, I shouldn't have to ask to order one. " and I didn't have to ask. As soon as it was announce they let me know my order was in.
I got lucky and bought one about a month ago here on in sell and trade forum with caboose and whistle steam effect! I'm not a huge Nickle Plate Road fan but that locomotive is so awesome and that steam whistle on it is the best sounding one in my opinion! I wish you well finding one their great.
I got one a few months ago. It's a nice engine it sounds like the real engine. It's a nice piece but I don't think it's worth what some are asking .. In other words I wouldn't pay 1500 for it .900 to 1100 be tops and if I had to pay the 1100 I paid for it again I probley pass.
Whats the Lionel # for this engine?

Hahaha yes it is)
Actually you need to keep an eye out because there have been both the whistle steam version and original non whistle steam version both come up for sale on this forum in the last 6 months or so and reasonable prices at that. I have both and love them both. Sound sets are actually quite a bit different. The non whistle steam version imo has the best whistle. Good luck! Check out the Lionel legacy s3 northern also if you like hard to find awesome engines.
