Hi all!

I bought a lemon at a show and I was wondering if anyone knew where I could get replacements for front and rear trucks? Both sets have one of the drive gears stripped out. Not the worm drive. Or does anyone know where to get them repaired? I assume the guy who sold it knew about it because there aren't any shavings in the housing. Thank you in advance. Bob20181129_121437

If you can find a train hobby shop  in your area that repairs Lionel trains, it should have a wheel press and tools to remove the wheels, and press the axle out. The old gear would then be free to take out, and the new gear would be pressed onto the axle.

I believe Henning's Trains does repairs if you want to ship it out; however it may be a while to get it repaired, this being the busy season. Call and find out.

You can also try everyone's favorite auction site -- there are numerous power trucks listed.

It all depends on how long the repair guy will take, cost to repair vs. buying and shipping the items to you.

Are the other power train components in good shape?

It's possible the worm shaft bearings were inserted the wrong way causing the worm shaft to wear the axle gears.

sorry to here about your bad experience , if you lived in brooklyn ny you could stop by the house for coffee and run some trains while i change your gears no charge ,i hate to see a fellow trainman in trouble  -p.s. if all else fails you could mail the gears and trucks to me                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    good luck                                                                                                                                                                                   jin grillo

The gear is pretty well sheared off both trucks. What was he pulling with this thing? But seriously thank you for all the replies! I'll have to see if I can find the gear and shaft online then go from there. The turnaround for a repair at a shop would be a long time like you guys were saying but I'll try to call the trading post in the morning and see what they say too. I've never been there before so might be a nice roadtrip.

It looks like there is not even a gear on the rear axle.

I noticed that as well.

If it were me I would pick up a pair of trucks from the auction site and just swap the side frames/pilot from you 2354 over to the replacement trucks. You should be able to find both the front and rear truck for $50-60 total. That's probably cheaper that paying someone to fix the trucks you have.

If I had to guess: the worm shaft was angled due to one of the bearings being inserted upside down. This would cause one side to sit higher than the other.

I had a power truck from a set that was angled. The wheels and gears would turn with enough force applied. I imagine over time I would have seen a wear pattern like yours.

I would agree with Lou.  The gears are available at under $3 each BUT, without the right tools to take the axles apart and reassemble them you are going to pay for a lot of labor.  If there is another show in your area, you might able to pick up a pair of trucks.  At most of the shows I have gone to there is a table, or two, of various motors and trucks, you might get lucky.
