Hello all - planning a simple temporary layout for my son's birthday party.  I'm needing to place a O27 oval inside an O31 oval, inside a 36 Fastrack oval.  The cake's going in the middle.

In order to do this in the space I have (the dining room table), I have to use straight extenders on the Fastrack oval (no problem there) AND on the O31 oval, as shown.

My problem is, the O31 extenders I'm seeing in the AnyRail software don't seem to exist in the real world, as far as I can tell.

Is there actually such a thing as Lionel O 2301S Straight Extension 1.87" or for that matter its counterpart Lionel O 2301C Curve Extension 31", 13 degrees  (which I don't need at the moment) or are these custom cut pieces?

Other ideas on how to deal with the problem are welcome as well.

Fastrack has all sorts of fitter pieces, but tubular comes in fulls and halfs (and longs); everything else must be cut. I recommend using the junkiest unrusted piece you can find and a hacksaw, sabre saw or Dremmel with cut-off-wheel to make the fitters. You will also need to buy or harvest more pins. 1 7/8 inches (1.875) is pretty small, so you could probably make 4 from a standard straight (5 if you are careful). You do not really need a tie on a piece this small except for aesthetics.

ams:  Years back, Lionel made an  O72  straight tubular track section that was  14 3/8" long. It matched the straight side of the O72 switch track These were later made by K-Line and others for a period of time. They are still available in the market place.  You could use one each with a regular straight and trim the longer one to the exact length that you need, there by, keeping the track pieces to a minimum. The longer  O72 straight has additionally spaced ties, so you could have the extra ties to secure the end of the track.  Hope this helps.  Dennis M.

Thanks to both of you for the replies.  I too have never seen the part--I just can't figure out why the AnyRail designers would randomly assign an identification number for something that essentially must be a custom piece.

I don't have a problem making the cuts, but I wanted to default to a manufactured piece if available. Are there any other magic solutions to getting a O27 loop inside an O31?

AHA! the pieces you are taking about came with the "23010" and "23011" switches on the above chart. These pieces could be removed for closer spacing of tracks, or kept in place to match the O22 switch size. The "lantern" goes with it too. The switches are famous for problems, but useful in tight situations. The switch extensions are probably hard to find by themselves. They have a full black plastic roadbed.

Ah!  That's the answer then--thanks Überstationmeister.

Normally I wouldn't choose to make a custom piece, but I can't determine any other way to fit an O31 oval between an O27 oval and an O36 oval other than what I've done here.

I cut the pieces tonight and the final product is as seen below.  Laid it out on the table and everything fits!  Shortened the O27 loop a bit to prevent any collisions around the corners. Thanks for the insights.
