I was going to post this in another thread, but I didn't want to hijack that posters thread.
His thread about polished versus painted passenger cars got me thinking.
I have always liked the Powhatan Arrow (N&W) set from 1981. But I never considered buying one because I thought they were the first painted aluminum cars, and I was not confident the paint would hold up over time.
So, how has the paint / finish held up on these passenger cars?

Having seen many sets of Lionel painted aluminum cars from that period, I'd say very well.
I have a friend who purchased this set when it was new and has had it on display or on his layout since the mid nineties and it still looks great. I recently cleaned the wheels on all of the cars and saw no peeling or signs of paint discoloration. These are nice cars that track and roll very well.

Not to worry, unless they have been abused the paint still looks factory fresh.
