Gentlemen,

I discovered last night that a Lionel prewar M10000 does not operate very efficiently on Gargraves track.  I concluded this is a result of the flat pickup shoes that are used on the 752M-33 motor.  There appears to be too much friction that is developed between the pickup shoe and the center rail of a piece of Gargraves track.  As the train would travel around, it would make an awful screaching sound and would often derail.  I decided to try the train set out on some Lionel tubular track of which I received more favorable results.

Is there a fiber pickup assembly available that contains pickup rollers instead of shoes that I could use instead of the 752M-31 pickup assembly?

It may be easier to adapt the frame and motor from a postwar 50 series diesel switcher under the body for operating enjoyment on the Gargraves track. I don't know the dimensions, but looking at service documents, it seems plausible without having to wreck the engine shell. Leaves the original motor intact and could be reinstalled.

The rollers and collector bracket on the postwar 1615 may work for an adaptation on the original.

Did you try a little WD-40 on the shoe? Won't last long, but may reduce the friction enough without harming anything.

Lionel 16,

Moonman has a great engineering idea for ya, I would definitley give it a try, and if it works make sure you come back and show how you did it, for OGR members knowledge.   I would definitley be interested in this retrofit.

Also Gargraves switches do not work all that well with Tin plate trains of any kind.
