I finally got the phone call I was waiting for! Legacy Station finally got my order for the new Lionel Norfolk Southern SD60E's. I ordered the "Honoring Our Veterans" and "Honoring First Responders" locomotives number 6920 and 9-1-1.

I went down to the store and Brian was even generous enough to run them for me, which allowed me to shoot this short video for yall!

I have the MTH version of 911, but I do ask, is that red on this Lionel version that way as it looks pinkish red in the video and photos. The real version I saw and also the MTH does not look like the red in the photos and video. 2 photos below are of what I saw in real life. As for the red on the Lionel Veterans looks better then the 911 Lionel version.

I agree-I sure hope it's the lighting in the photos of the Lionel engines and the paint isn't that pinkish red-hope someone else will chime in and report.

You are correct. The red is a little bit faded. However, that really does not bother me so much so the details do. I love how they included the intercooler fan ontop of the engine near the dynamic brake section and that they did the PTC boxes.

Like everything, nothing is perfect on these units, but they are still very fine models and I'm glad I purchased them!

Stirling,  Thank you for showing us your new Diesels, they are Beautiful. Also, they will make great additions to your Layout. To me the color is not an important factor, It's the message these 2 Engines say to America....We are a great Country, there are Many Men and Women serving our Wounded Veterans and Ordinary people like Us, "EVERYDAY"!

Although there are lots of Mixed Views, Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder, Therefore, I Choose Lionel, Lionel's Legacy Command System is my Favorite Operating System.....

Lionel has presented to us their Versions of these Famous Locomotives, their choice of colors is fine, Legacy makes them Fun to Run, a lash up will be Crowd Stopping, Enjoy your new Engines.  Mine are on the way.....Wow!!!

Happy Thanksgiving.....I will be in Legacy Station Friday after Thanksgiving Day.....Thank you for the neat video....

Thanks Larry! I'm really happy with the engines personally and they were well worth the wait. What I'm looking forward to doing is lashing these units up with the NS (PRR) 1854 SD70ACe I got from you at the beginning of the year! That will look sharp!23

I'm not quite sure what you mean about my layout though, I've never personally been featured in an OGR video nor has my layout as it's still under contruction.

Sounds like the sounds they used are the same that are in my BN SD40-2. IIRC these are the same sounds they used in the SD60's from several years back as well. The bell is also the same, horns are different. While this isn't a bad sound set (it sounds very good at notch 8!), I'm not sure it's quite correct for the 60E. Could be wrong. But it kind of makes sense that Lionel would be consistent in putting the same sound set in similar locomotives.

I took some pictures of mine. I got both the Veteran's and First Responder's units.

While the 911 is lighter than the red on the Veteran's, it certainly IS red. Not pink like in the original pictures. I've very happy with the colors! The pictures posted above of the real engine are very dark. I think Lionel did a great job with the colors on both units.

Also, the trucks to me look great! All that looks off are the journal bearings, but like that is really that huge of a deal?

And yes, the trucks are 6 wheel. But Lionel made them 4-wheel powered. Like most diesels I see. Usually is due to the requirement of tight curves.

Overall, I'm quite happy with these engines! Good job Lionel.

For what they're are charging, the sideframes should be correct. This is not marketed as 027 or LionChief.

Feels like 1982 again

Looks pretty dang close to me! What is everyone complaining about? Oh wait... it's the bash Lionel forum. I forgot.

You are obviously NOT looking closely enough at the journal boxes on the top (prototype) photo as compared to the journal boxes on the model (lower photo).

Well it's official, MTH Wins

Actually, those of us who purchased the MTH models are the real winners.    For a much better price/performance point, we got a terrific looking model PLUS the added bonus of Wick Moorman's voice in the customized dialog sequences!  MTH went the extra mile with these models in terms of overall execution.  But folks with Legacy-exclusive control on their layouts at least have a chance to own the Lionel models too, albeit at a premium price.

I just finished reviewing the January 2017 issue of OGRR as I am a digital subscriber. They did a review of the MTH version of the SD60E First Responders engine and the red looked just as faded as the Lionel engine on the first post on this thread. Maybe it is just a photography thing.

When I was at York I took a look at the Lionel DM&IR SD38 which looked terrible in the post on the forum but looked a heck of a lot better on Charles Ro's display than in the pictures on the forum. Maybe it is worth looking at it in person.

Larry,

These models are fantastic to me. I'm glad I got them and I'd buy them again!

I finally had a chance to get my Lionel Veterans unit on the track. Crisp paint job (I saw Eric's video of the MTH 9-1-1 and was disappointed in the quality of the paint job around the cab). Accurate colors. Sounds are okay. Bit bummed about the trucks but not a deal breaker.

As it's new tooling, switches are all topside which is always appealing.

And the horse is facing the right direction to boot! ;-)
