Most likely the shell was put on the incorrect frame at some time prior to your acquisition.  I have a 2367 Wabash with silver  trucks on the A and B units.  And, it is original that way, though not as was common.  The shell also has portholes with the inserts.  The common 1955 Wabash F3 has filled in portholes.  Fact is, 1955 was first year for the Wabash and other filled-in portholes, last year for open portholes.  The Wabash F3 I have came with a last year St Fe frame and was painted onto a "left over" St Fe shell.  So, you do find them, and it is easy to change shells.  Question, is it a single motor, or duel motor?  2243 engines were for 027 and had single motors.  Also had black trucks as seen in attached pics, not silver as in the 2343 St Fe F3s.  Jesse   TCALionel Post 2243 St. Fe F-3 A units - 2 w boxesLionel Post 2367 Wabash F-3 AB paper, boxes, master cart

Mine has a silver frame, closed portholes, black trucks, black pilot, and a single motor/single motor frame.

Yes, they are single motor for 027 sets.  The pilot, all I have or have seen, have all been silver, and with black trucks.  Yes, silver frame and closed port holes.  Lionel ceased the open port holes in 1955, when they issued the Wabash 2367.  The engines I have was evidently put together with left over St Fe F3 shells, and on a St Fe frame, hence the silver trucks.  A "transition" piece pf F3s.
