I have taken some of my Lionel Pulmotor, MagnaTraction, engines out of storage where they have been sitting unrun for 20 years or more.  I am giving them a through relube. including the worm gear and driving axle, but am having trouble removing the "worm gear cover" as it is called in the Lionel parts diagrams.

Some of the worm gear covers have "popped out" fairly easily but now I have one (a Lionel Mike of 1994 vintage) where the cover over the worm gear seems impervious to prying.  How far should I go? Is there a tool that has worked better for you?

Should I loosen the motor screws, or is this a no-no?  Would it do any good if I did?

Thanks for reading this.  I hope to hear from you.
