So in this latest Lionel catalog, a rerun of the former K-Line F40s are being done. I currently have the K-Line F40's that I upgraded the lights and swapped out the generic GP sound board with an Altas O SD35 sound board.

Im interested in the Lionel Amtrak "Heritage" set being done but is the cost of the new F40"s worth it? [esp when there were issues with the previous F40 run]. I run conventional.

Thanks in advance for your input in this matter.

I am not sure I have any sagely wisdom on this one beyond the following:

  • I suspect the mechanical issues with the previous issue have been resolved.  As I recall it was a wire that was too short that rubbed on the motor?
  • I can't comment on the sounds.  The F40PH prime movers on Amtrak ran at full RPM due to the HEP engineering so SD35 prime mover sounds while better than the K-Line sounds still are not correct.  Amtrak F40PHs earned the nickname "Screamers".  However, a nice KL5A horn versus the Leslie A-200 that the K-Line units have is a definite upgrade.  Since a constant sound prime mover isn't very interesting sounding, I doubt Lionel will model that correctly.
  • The kinematic pilot is an upgrade over the K-Line models.
  • The front coupler on the K-Line model sticks out really far.
  • While K-Line colors do not match Amtrak's colors perfectly, they are generally very good.
  • K-Line models can be found for around $200 so price is a factor.

I am interested in the new model as well as the Phase III heritage cars.  I am going to pass on the model as I have enough F40PHs to last a lifetime and I can't justify upgrading locomotives and getting new cars at the same time.  Just my 2 cents.  I really like my K-Line ones and have all three numbers they offered.

Still, the new Lionel model is very attractive as I plan on keeping my Amtrak in 3 rail.

The last run of the F40PH units, other than the issue with the wiring and the number board lights worked fine for me.  The wiring was just a stupid assembly issue, they ran it right across the top of the flywheel and didn't use permanent adhesive to stick it in place.  I personally watched a couple of these go up in smoke, fortunately mine was not one of them.  I opened my engine and cabbage unit and fixed the wiring issue and the oddball intensity of the number boards in both of them.  Other than those issues, they run and sound fine.
