While much laughing is done by us all when seeing the term "rare" in auctions, there actually are a few Marx locos and sets that are unconmon.  I years ago found an incomplete boxed set, and have slowly acquired the cars, needing only the engine . I won one at auction, seller demanded one form of payment, l offered another ..seller canceled sale immediately, without a chance to negotiate another method. Still have incomplete set.

In my case, I let more than one opportunity get away to buy a Lionel New York Central S type electric. I chickened-out because of these Lionel locomotives have TMCC and I use DCS exclusively. To this day, I am skeptical about adding TMCC to my railroad. No excuse though, I could convert the Lionel locomotive to PS2 or PS3.

A couple over the years.

One was the MTH Premiere NS Executive set that I spotted here on the Forum one Sunday afternoon for a ridiculously low price. It had just been posted as I looked at it but had promised the wife to hold off buying anything for awhile. I went and made my case and she relented so I went back and missed it by literally minutes.

The other was a lionel FEC E6 single dummy A unit on eBay that I could have obtained at 'Buy it Now" for a hundred bucks.  Again, tight finances prevented me hitting the button!

I really haven't let any slip away, but I have had to pass on a few because my train budget was seriously depleted. I still have plenty to keep me going though, so no regrets.

Had I been back in the hobby at the time, I may have purchased a Lionel diecast ES44AC in BNSF attire, but they preceded me by a year or so and were gone before I knew they existed. Prices are much too high for me now. I now have an ample amount of MTH and Lionel ES44ACs which are also very nice. I am quite happy with those, still no regrets.

Gentlemen,

Back in the 80's I let a Set of MTH P2 Union Railroad Baby Blue, with White Trimming Switcher Engines, in Bill & Walts show Case slip thru my hands, when Dave the owner offered them to me at a steal of a price.   I wanted to wait for MTH to release the UR Switchers and Caboose, in the original Green and Black, however MTH never did make them, and probably never will.  Should have purchased those P2 Baby Blue UR Switchers.

I also let a custom painted Wellsville, Addison and Galeton (WAG) RR, K-Line Conventional Shay Engine slip thru my hands, because I did not have enough cash on me, when it was offered for sale, by the old WWII gentlemen, that custom painted it for his own O Gauge Christmas layout.

I would have to say the 3rd Rail B&O Mikado with the Vandy tender.  Way to much money for me at the time, although shortly thereafter I ordered the 3rd Rail B&O T-3 with the long Vandy tender.  Secondhand versions of the 3rd Rail Mikado seldom come up for sale, and when they do, still command a fairly high price.  Since then, I did buy two lightly used K-Line Mikados (with TMCC) for so that I could double-head them, and the price for both was still only about 60% the price of one 3rd Rail Mike.

I did let the Lionel NS Reading Heritage SD70ACe get away from me when it was initially released.  After some patience on eBay, however, I found one last year at a good price.

The one thing I have not been able to find has been a set of Golden Gate Depot B&O Heavyweight cars.  I had some other preorders placed with 3rd Rail at the time and just didn't have the extra cash.  These cars are very hard to find on the secondary market.  Hoping that if I make it to York next Fall (would be my first time) that I might find a set there.

Early on I regretted not picking up the 3rd Rail J3a Super Hudson. Later learned it was blessing as I found two for a fraction of the price of a new one. Now I don't even consider pre ordering. It not only saves me a boatload of money but also eliminates most of the headaches of the early adopters with engines broken out of the box or shortly after.

There was an Ives Milwaukee Road orange and maroon set on eBay last year for several weeks.  I should have bought it.

Then there were two 2800 series tinplate beer manufacturer cars that were twice MSRP, but thankfully the guys on this forum convinced me to buy them. I have not seen them for sale since.
