I sold my 1980's Nickel Plate Berkshire when I ventured into large scale. I would like to find one again. At the moment there is one on Ebay without sound. I didn't know Lionel made them without sound.
Narrowing the focus on my layout, I had decided no passenger service and hence I planned to pass on all car body diesels, though I liked the F- units. Tempted with L&N F7's in Legacy (6-34694), I resisted too long. Failing to pull the trigger in time, made my decision for me.
An MTH PAN AM GP40 a few weeks ago. Can't have them all..........
Back in the early seventies, I left a American Flyer Missouri Pacific freight set in like new condition get away from me.
Atlas mp1500 Belt Railway Chicago switcher, bicentennial paint. Rarely seen

VIA Rail F40PH by MTH at Jimmy Sutters shop. I bought two Amtrak F40PH that day in his store and some passenger cars. Wanted the VIA engines but couldnt swing buying all. Jimmy Sutter even suggested I would need the added power to get back home to Ohio. I should have got them. Hard to find anywhere now.
I was at a train show in Richmond, Ca. last January, and I saw a custom painted Lionel F-3 ABA set in Black Widow. I passed on it because I had just bought four binders of post war Lionel repair manuals(copies). I wish I had seen the Diesels first.
Over the years there have been many things that I did not purchase that in retrospect, I should have. Also many things that I had, and should have held onto, instead of letting it go.
No need to loose any sleep. They made more than one, if you really want a particular item, its out there.
CW makes a good point. Back around 2002, MTH catalogued a RK New York Ontario & Western 4-8-2. I passed and always regretted it. NYO&W engines are uncommon.......15+ years later, I picked up a nice one on this Forum for a good price.

2 engines...
The Scale Polar Express. Had too many other engines on order.
And the Legacy Turbine. I did order this engine but it came into the shop wet and moldy so I passed on it and did not pursue a replacement.

That's the thing about trains. You pass on one item, and there are two more right around the corner.
While much laughing is done by us all when seeing the term "rare" in auctions, there actually are a few Marx locos and sets that are unconmon. I years ago found an incomplete boxed set, and have slowly acquired the cars, needing only the engine . I won one at auction, seller demanded one form of payment, l offered another ..seller canceled sale immediately, without a chance to negotiate another method. Still have incomplete set.
I had to sell my Black vision 700E that one was the only piece I have missed
In my case, I let more than one opportunity get away to buy a Lionel New York Central S type electric. I chickened-out because of these Lionel locomotives have TMCC and I use DCS exclusively. To this day, I am skeptical about adding TMCC to my railroad. No excuse though, I could convert the Lionel locomotive to PS2 or PS3.
Not really.
There may be some I regret selling, but not so much not buying.

Yup. This one . . .
3-rd Rail CP D10 Early. Got the "late" version. Still looking for the "Early.'
Found one through the buy and sell. Was about to send payment when it dawned on me the seller was selling the 2-rail version.

Yep. 3rd Rail Allegheny from about 2007. The one that had the forward-reverse eccentric arms that actually raised and lowered when the direction changed.

Above and beyond any shadow of a doubt the K-Line scale NYC Hudson. An incredible bargain that I passed on. Still regret it!
A couple over the years.
One was the MTH Premiere NS Executive set that I spotted here on the Forum one Sunday afternoon for a ridiculously low price. It had just been posted as I looked at it but had promised the wife to hold off buying anything for awhile. I went and made my case and she relented so I went back and missed it by literally minutes.
The other was a lionel FEC E6 single dummy A unit on eBay that I could have obtained at 'Buy it Now" for a hundred bucks. Again, tight finances prevented me hitting the button!
Way back in the early 80's when I was trucking OTR I was laidover in AZ. Went to a train show and passed up a chance to buy a '50 773 with 2426W tender for $500. Looking back on it now I'm thinking 'WHAT AN IDIOT" Never see that loco go for that again!! Talk about regrets!!!
Blow-outs on:
Lionel Legacy N&W 2-6-6-2. Was not /is not a Z1b. Still waiting..........
WbW GG1s. N&W didn't have any.
Williams, florida east coast steamer,,,2 years haven't seen one yet, ahhhh
I really haven't let any slip away, but I have had to pass on a few because my train budget was seriously depleted. I still have plenty to keep me going though, so no regrets.
Had I been back in the hobby at the time, I may have purchased a Lionel diecast ES44AC in BNSF attire, but they preceded me by a year or so and were gone before I knew they existed. Prices are much too high for me now. I now have an ample amount of MTH and Lionel ES44ACs which are also very nice. I am quite happy with those, still no regrets.
Lionel BSA ES44AC could of gotten it from MLHS for $600 when they first came out.
MTH 0-8-8-0 Angus. For $600 Wish I could find one.
MTH l4b Premire Mohawk, for $570.
Gentlemen,
Back in the 80's I let a Set of MTH P2 Union Railroad Baby Blue, with White Trimming Switcher Engines, in Bill & Walts show Case slip thru my hands, when Dave the owner offered them to me at a steal of a price. I wanted to wait for MTH to release the UR Switchers and Caboose, in the original Green and Black, however MTH never did make them, and probably never will. Should have purchased those P2 Baby Blue UR Switchers.
I also let a custom painted Wellsville, Addison and Galeton (WAG) RR, K-Line Conventional Shay Engine slip thru my hands, because I did not have enough cash on me, when it was offered for sale, by the old WWII gentlemen, that custom painted it for his own O Gauge Christmas layout.

Yes:
3rd rail m1b, PRR T1 -3 porthole version, PRR Q1 streamline version, PRR FP7 AA both in Tuscan and dlge single stripe, PRR SD 7's
Atlas O Conrail MP15 DC and U23b.
Also S.M.R. PRR D8 and coaches in 3rail.
I would have to say the 3rd Rail B&O Mikado with the Vandy tender. Way to much money for me at the time, although shortly thereafter I ordered the 3rd Rail B&O T-3 with the long Vandy tender. Secondhand versions of the 3rd Rail Mikado seldom come up for sale, and when they do, still command a fairly high price. Since then, I did buy two lightly used K-Line Mikados (with TMCC) for so that I could double-head them, and the price for both was still only about 60% the price of one 3rd Rail Mike.
I did let the Lionel NS Reading Heritage SD70ACe get away from me when it was initially released. After some patience on eBay, however, I found one last year at a good price.
The one thing I have not been able to find has been a set of Golden Gate Depot B&O Heavyweight cars. I had some other preorders placed with 3rd Rail at the time and just didn't have the extra cash. These cars are very hard to find on the secondary market. Hoping that if I make it to York next Fall (would be my first time) that I might find a set there.

Nassau Hobby has the New York s1, if you want a second chance, and 10 % off
Early on I regretted not picking up the 3rd Rail J3a Super Hudson. Later learned it was blessing as I found two for a fraction of the price of a new one. Now I don't even consider pre ordering. It not only saves me a boatload of money but also eliminates most of the headaches of the early adopters with engines broken out of the box or shortly after.

Unfortunately, not nearly enough of them.
Vision Line UP Genset Switcher 2701.
I just found that one on ebay!!

By chance, are you referring to 6-8215, the 736 remake that came out in 1982 in the Fall Catalog?
There was an Ives Milwaukee Road orange and maroon set on eBay last year for several weeks. I should have bought it.
Then there were two 2800 series tinplate beer manufacturer cars that were twice MSRP, but thankfully the guys on this forum convinced me to buy them. I have not seen them for sale since.

Weaver Southern Tennessean for a good price on EBay a few years back. There were only 250 made so not an easy find. The ones I have seen for sale are in very poor condition or scratched...not for me.
