@cpasam, as long as he keeps on with grounding The transformers against UL spec 697 and the advice of many knowledgeable professionals on this form, his rebuilt should be avoided.

Sure, to the layman it seems like the right thing to do, but then look around, what other train transformers have a ground? See https://ogrforum.com/...y=148675927400293147

Even modern UL specifications for Toy Transformers  in section 16 of specification 697 state that the cord, plug and unit should NOT be grounded, at least 18 gauge in size, between 5 and 10 ft long and not detachable from the transformer. I can't directly quote the source because it is copyrighted, but you can purchase your own copy: https://standardscatalog.ul.co...aspx?productId=UL697

There are too many other good transformer rebuilders such as those above and @Tranz4mr.

Hi Jim, I have been repairing and upgrading post war transformers for many years, primarily KW and ZW’s.  I have an inventory of all the parts normally needed. I do not ground any transformer, never have, never will! To date I have never had any complaints about my work from any buyer, many being forum members.

Now that said, there are many excellent sources for transformer updates and repairs in all areas of the country. Many by forum members. With shipping costs continuously rising, and KW and especially ZW’s being so heavy, shipping costs can get significant. Since you will be paying both ways it might be wise to select a close by source. I live in NH, zip 03086. I would be happy to give you a quote on a repair and upgrade.

Have a super weekend and stay safe. Jim Lawson
