I have an KW that I want to have reconditioned before I pass it on to some young ones. I used Ken Koehler for a previous KW but he is no longer with us.
Thanks

I bought a couple if these and they both had issues. I was curious what one would cost to have rebuilt.

Chinatrain99, Last time I did one it was less than $100 which is still the case on one repair person's web page (he though is taking a break until May of this year)
DK122trains. Thanks for the lead. I just sent them an email

Here's another transformer repair tip ... he refurbished two of my KWs - perfectly.

Great Question, is it possible to have a CW80 transformer repaired? It would be nice if possible. Happy Railroading
Plus one for Davis Lyons. I bought a refurbished KW that has worked perfectly for years.
Sadly, Davis Lyons is the one who says on his web page that he is taking a break until May of 20

I'm in WNY and perform transformer work.
Harry Lutz who is west of Allentown PA. Harry does excellent Lionel transformer rebuild and modification work at reasonable prices. He can replace the rollers, power cords, upgrade to solid state diodes and even cure the humming problem on older ZW units

I think Trainworld in Lynbrook does transformer repair for a reasonable cost. Several years ago they reconditioned n old Lionel TW for something like $59 which was a standard charged at the time. I don't know what they charge now but its worth a call.

Guys ...
Glad to hear there are several other transformer service pros out there in Lionel Land. About "repairing" a Lionel CW80 ... as I understand it, a faulty device is not fixable. Lionel suggests:
1) cut the power plug off
2) return it to them for a replacement.

Thanks guys for all the recommendations. I have emailed with a couple and am on my way to getting it repaired.

@cpasam, as long as he keeps on with grounding The transformers against UL spec 697 and the advice of many knowledgeable professionals on this form, his rebuilt should be avoided.
Sure, to the layman it seems like the right thing to do, but then look around, what other train transformers have a ground? See https://ogrforum.com/...y=148675927400293147
Even modern UL specifications for Toy Transformers in section 16 of specification 697 state that the cord, plug and unit should NOT be grounded, at least 18 gauge in size, between 5 and 10 ft long and not detachable from the transformer. I can't directly quote the source because it is copyrighted, but you can purchase your own copy: https://standardscatalog.ul.co...aspx?productId=UL697
There are too many other good transformer rebuilders such as those above and @Tranz4mr.

I have a couple of Harry's rebuilds. They both work perfectly.
Hi Jim, I have been repairing and upgrading post war transformers for many years, primarily KW and ZW’s. I have an inventory of all the parts normally needed. I do not ground any transformer, never have, never will! To date I have never had any complaints about my work from any buyer, many being forum members.
Now that said, there are many excellent sources for transformer updates and repairs in all areas of the country. Many by forum members. With shipping costs continuously rising, and KW and especially ZW’s being so heavy, shipping costs can get significant. Since you will be paying both ways it might be wise to select a close by source. I live in NH, zip 03086. I would be happy to give you a quote on a repair and upgrade.
Have a super weekend and stay safe. Jim Lawson
Thanks for the updates but I got this taken care of back in March
