Can anyone recommend a good MTH repaiman in the western NY area ?  Got a bum engine and I'm hoping to find someone who I can take it to directly who does'nt have to send it out.

I Purchased my dream loco, a MTH P3 NYC F7 ABA set at the Syracuse show last November.  It was used but in like new condition.  Got home, ran it through its paces and all DCS functions worked well.  Tried running it a few weeks ago on a friend's layout and the DCS handheld seemed to have located it but it didn't seem to recognize it but it ran anyway.  After about 5 minutes it stopped abruptly and when attempting to restart, I heard a pop from under the shell of the lead unit and saw what looked like real smoke coming out. An inspection under the shell found that the smoke unit was white-hot (got a nasty burn on my finger), the wick was burned to a crisp and a blister on one of the capacitors on the circuit board which must have been the popping sound.

Probably going to end up paying the difference between the great deal I got and what a new set would have cost but I really love this set of locos. Any advice on a good repair shop would be greatly appreciated.  Would also be interested in hearing if anyone else has experienced the same type of problem.

Yes i had a engine like that it had the PS 2  5 volt boards which they stopped making because they over heat, i had a capacitor that blew and made a pop sound, unfortunately after that the boards were dead, you'll probably have to have the boards replaced and they will probably put the new PS 3 boards in and then repair or replace your smoke unit, !

I don't blame you for not wanting to ship the engine and take a chance of it getting broken in transit. Good luck getting your engine fixed
