Hey gang--

I thought I would post a little message to update everyone on the status of THE TRAVELING BOXCAR.  I am talking about the TRAVELING BOXCAR that started here in 2004.

Last week I got an email from Tom Panettiere "MNCW" who had the Boxcar visit his layout twice.  http://www.trainyard.net/boxca...panettiere/index.htm  and  http://www.trainyard.net/boxca...nettiere_2/index.htm .  He asked me "What's UP?"

Here is the latest --  I have the Traveling Boxcar and it is in good condition.  It never got involved in any political nonsense it just lost its momentum.  The last several visits became like pulling teeth.  I would send the boxcar out and wouldn't hear anything for weeks.  I would write and write and get excuse after excuse or no response at all.

There were a few times I was afraid the Boxcar was lost forever.  When I finally got it back, it was postmarked Feb 28, 2011.  I put it on my shelf, unopened and left town to work on a movie.  The lack of interest from everyone from that point made me feel it was a good time to take a little break.

I have only received a couple of email about the Traveling Boxcar sense then.

All the visits are still available to see on http://www.trainyard.net/boxcar

I would be willing to get the Boxcar back on the road again if I felt there was some real interest out there.  Perhaps now, 5 years later, there is some new blood on the forum that would be willing to help get it going again.

For me, I would be happy to continue to post pictures on the website, etc., but I really would like someone to partner with me keeping track of the details.

The original idea for the Traveling Boxcar came about through a discussion between Chris Barany  "Lehigh Valley Railroad" and myself.  John McGrath "John McGrath" donated the "reefer" and Jeff Sohn "Jeff78rr" painted and labeled it up for us.  The rest of the ride was done by members of this forum.

We had simple rules.  6 or 8 pictures and captions to make the reading more interesting.  I think over the years we did a nice job.  Many staged scenes, told stories and entertained us along the way.

One of my favorites was http://www.trainyard.net/boxca..._allentown/index.htm or Wreck In Allentown.  It was visits like this that kept us all interested and made us all anticipate the next stop for THE TRAVELING BOXCAR.

So for me words are not cheap.  I am happy to get the project back on the road but I would like some help.

If one or a couple of you would like to assist administratively, I will continue to log the trips on THE TRAVELING BOXCAR Website.  Its up to you guys.

I am here and can be reached easily.  Send me a personal message, reply to this post or send me an email to the email address listed on http://www.trainyard.net/boxcar.  We had fun doing this before, we can do it again.

Regards

Greg, I am on the list for hosting the LCCA car, but this is the first I heard of the OGR car since I didn't join until 2012.  I certainly would like to host the OGR car and comply with posting photos, captions, sending the car on to its next stop,in a timely manner. I don't think I want to take on administrative duties Unless we had a good commitment from a lot of folks.

I think it's a great idea, but I am puzzled. (as I so often am by people's behavior)

Why would someone ask to have the boxcar sent to their layout and then just sit on it? If they were not interested in taking the pictures and writing the story, why would they even request that the car be sent to them?

As the young folks say... Wazzup wit dat?

I don't understand either.  Of course there can be the rare occurance where someone gets the car, then goes in the hospital or worse, and we don't hear back.  However, the timing of that is rare.

A project like this always takes someone to spearhead the effort.  In our case, I ended up doing the entire project for several years.  I am not willing to do it by myself any longer.  If there is someone that would like to help, we can easily get things going again.

Basically, we need to keep track of the people that sign up, keep track of special dates (often a club or a meet needs the Boxcar to show up at a particular time).  We need to make sure that each person has the correct address for forward the boxcar.  And, we need to correspond with each person to be sure they do it in a timely manner.

I sounds simple, and when things are working well, it is simple.

When I was doing it I used to send a test mail to each person to make sure it was a good address.  My biggest fear is that we send boxcar off to a bad address and then never see it again.  To help with that, I used to send each person a mailing label so I could be sure they had the correct forwarding address.

I have official boxes and shippers from the manufacturer original boxcar.  Each visitor simply needs to put the boxcar in the box, tape it closed, stick on the label and take it to the post office.

BTW -- It costs $10 to $15 to ship the Traveling Boxcar to most locations around the United States.

I would accept photos by email or anyway people wanted to send them.  I just requested that there only be 6 or 8 photos, at least a couple of them needed to include a good picture of the Traveling Boxcar on the layout.  We don't just want layout pictures.

There is a little work editing captions, resizing pictures and making the web pages.  I am still fine with doing that part myself.  I would like someone else to wrangle the mailing list, tracking, etc.

If one or two of you would like to take on that administration, I will be happy to ship the Traveling Boxcar on to some wonderful 2015 3-rail layout ASAP.

I remember when the project started and Chris was very active here. I did wonder what had happened to the car over the years.

Wait a minute! Chris is still here. This thread is a pleasant surprise indeed. I knew the car had (finally) been returned to Greg and he had pulled it off the tracks. When I saw that URL, it took me back a bit. I remember having lots of fun coming up with that story and pictures. Thanks for the compliment, Greg. I had no idea you liked my submission so much!

It would be nice to see the car out and about again. But I do recall the administrative headache you had keeping track of it. Maybe we can get it right this time?

Hey Greg,

Uh-oh! Hopefully, I didn't create more stress in your life by bringing this up!

Glad that you are thinking about starting this up again. It was lots of fun. I also enjoyed how people would include some local bits and pieces that traveled with the boxcar, kind of like a time capsule of its travel throughout the country.

Working fulltime and with my bad memory, you probably don't want my administrative help...I would be glad to be some sort of official email nagger to propmt/keep the process moving along if that helps you.

If you move along with this please put me near the end so I can try to build a new layout!

Maybe Rich/OGR can offer some sort of administrative support?
