Killian,

I had the same thought when I looked at the house in September of 2004.

The previous owner wrapped the iron support column with multi-colored rope. It looked good, so I left it alone. (Nowadays, the big box folks carry a "sleve" for wrapping these sorts of basement poles, but I'm leaving well enough alone!)
