My MoPac Heritage SD70ACE is not as loud as my newer ES44ac's.  Can this be fixed by simply changing the speaker to the baby fatboy speaker that is in the newer engines?  Or is it the railsounds board that make the difference?  What can I say I like my diesels roaring loud lol.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

I like high volume, or at least the option. Make sure you have the volume up all the way. My MoPac Heritage SD70ace and other SD70Aces have a decent volume, but not as loud as the ES44acs.

The Legacy ES44acs and the 2012 catalog SD80macs have two speakers. These are 16 ohm speakers instead of a single 8 ohm speaker. Super sound and loud volume. The SD70Ace has one 8 ohm fat boy, like the rest of the Legacy engines. I don't know if the new SD70macs will have two speakers. I hope so.

There were complaints about low volume on some of the Legacy engines several years ago. I was not happy with the low volume on my AC6000, SD60, and U30C from the 2010/2011 catalogs. I quit pre-ordering for a while for that reason.

I always have volume turned all the way up lol.  My CSX AC6000 cab#618 isn't very loud also.

So is there room in the SD70ACE's for the 2 speakers like the newer ES44s?

I remember this, or at least what other people said about it at that time - including that there was some noise pollution regulation in play, which had resulted in a sound software limitation that can't be overridden or overcome by changing out speakers. But I've never had an issue with sound on my Legacy AC6000 although it gets run in a fairly confined space.

I doubt if two speakers will fit. The fuel tank for the SD70ace only has one speaker hole and looks to be about 5 1/2 inches long (between the trucks.) The fuel tanks for the ES44ac is about 6 inches long. Not enough space between the trucks on the SD70ace.

BTW, the 2013 catalog Dash-9s also have multiple speakers appear to have this same 6 inch dimension. I don't have one, but I assume they sound similar to the ES44acs.

My advice is to not mess around trying to modify your treasured older engines. Just removing and replacing the shell is an adventure. One Legacy ES44ac is plenty loud unless you are in a big warehouse. If not, you need your hearing checked. Put one of these in your train/engine consist. You could still make any engine the lead, horn blow, crew talk, or even multiple horn blow. I just got the new Legacy UP ES44ac and it is great hitched up with a UP Heritage SD70ace.

The newer engines have the IR sensor underneath the fuel tank. You will want one of them in your consist to take advantage of the new Lionel sensor track. Allows you to automate some things like blowing horns at crossings, simulating laboring when climbing trestle, station approach, playback of recorded commands, etc.

Press the "speed" button on the legacy remote and turn up the labor all the way. Really brings out the bass in the locomotive.

go to the bottom of this link and look at the right side of the cab2 screen

push the "efx" up button key

The reason that I asked "how are you turning the volume up" is because the maximum volume limit is set by the manual volume control on the engine. If that is not turned to maximum volume, the remote volume control can only raise it to the manual maximum set.

MLAT or others have not mentioned where they have the manual setting.

Try gently turning that to maximum and have at it with the remote.

All the sounds seem low.  Maybe I'm spoiled by the newer ES44s being so much louder.  Can anyone compare how the NS Heritage SD70ACE's sound as far as volume compared to the UP ones?
