No.
You will need:
-a smoke unit
-a third rail pickup to supply power
Be sure to place the unit away from the shell so the heat does not melt and distort the shell.
Where do you plan to let the "smoke" out?

Buy yourself an MTH operating reefer car, 20-94049. They have a smoke unit to simulate ice vapor as well as discharging boxes. It would give you a good starting point to building your own smoker. They aren't cheap, the retail was $129.95 back about 5 yrs ago. Might be hard to find.

you have to watch closely to see the smoke but they work well, I have one.
No for me either.

I bought a Lionel army bunk car that smokes like crazy. Can I swap out the smoke unit in it for the anemic smoke unit in a Lionel I12 caboose?
I use the MTH HO smoke unit for small operating cars that I want to add smoke to. It's smaller than O-gauge smoke units, but still a fan driven smoke unit.
How about a Cheech and Chong smoking passenger car perhaps? Never made one, but perhaps the idea will inspire someone else.
Wonder what scent of Mega-Steam would work? LOL
Gunrunnerjohn, is it a fairly easy fix to add the MTH unit to the Lionel I12? I am mechanically challenged but have done an ERR upgrade and a couple of other small projects.
Andy, I think another bunk car is in order! Takes me back to my army days of Lebanese hash and Hendrix on the stereo. Good times. It's a really good bunk car and I was surprised at the incredible smoke output.
Unless someone knows a source for O guage smoke units, I am waiting for the Atlas O smoke units so I can add smoke to some of my dummy Alco, BLW, and GE engines.
Would be also interested in Simulated ALCo Turbo Lag circuit for these smoke units too!

The basic steps are physically mounting the smoke unit, fabricating a stack to connect it to the car, and electrical. I posted pictures of the smoke unit so you can see the details. The mounting bracket comes off if you want to mount it in a different manner. The smoke motor likes 2.5-3.0 volts DC, and the resistor is a 16 ohm unit. I use from 6 to 8 volts on the smoke heater in these, that's all you really want to try to get out of them.

You can buy smoke units from Lionel or MTH, that's where I get mine. As mentioned, here's an MTH HO unit.
