Hello!  First post.

I am very new to trains.  Haven't had one since I was a nipper.  The one I had back then was a Marx.  I remember that the engine was #666.  My mother thought the number was bad juju!  In any case, found one on ebay, and managed to get it cleaned up and lubed so that it runs.  The headlight does not work, so I am assuming the bulb is burned out.  Anyone know where I can get a replacement?

I also picked up a Lionel Southern Crescent loco and tender.  It is one of the old ones without all the bells and whistles - no pun intended!  Anyway, can someone explain just what the three way switch on top is supposed to do?  I know one setting allows both forward and reverse.  What do the other two positions do?  Can't tell much difference, so not sure it's working right.  I don't have any smoke fluid, so which setting disables the smoke function?  Sorry, for the really dumb questions, but I gotta start somewhere!

Thanks in advance!

Yukon Jack,

Welcome to the best Train forum on earth, you will definitely like the knowledge you can gain here and the people who supply it.  Now in order for us to help you with your light bulb, you need to give us the numbers on the bulb or better yet take a picture of the bulb and post it so we can see the numbers.

Now about your switch lever, if this is old Lionel Tin Plate most switches have 3 setting, one that allows the engine to move in both directions, one that only allows forward movement, and one for neutral.

Hope I helped you a might

Here is a good source for Marx parts, including your bulb.

If your locomotive has a metal lever sticking out the top, that is the e-unit lever. In one position, it will allow the loco to cycle forward-neutral-reverse-neutral then forward again. The other position will lock it into any position you choose- forward, neutral or reverse. The older locomotives do not have a switch to shut off the smoke unit. Newer locomotives do. What # is your Lionel Engine?

Hi, Larry.

Thanks for the link to the Marx parts.  I will check that out.

My Lionel loco is the Southern Crescent 6-8702.  I have not been able to find a PDF of the manual for this engine on the Lionel site.

Thanks for the welcome Pine Creek RR.
