Decided to build a small portable layout for my small but growing Marx tinplate collection… so far I have most of the needed track, I’m just waiting on the switches to ship…

I do have some 6” 4 wheel stuff, but my main interest is the 3/16 scale equipment. With that in mind I intend to go for a tinplate style layout with a hint of scale mixed in. Plans call for some indoor/outdoor fake grass carpet and a few Marx tin buildings and accessories for the old school look, contrasting with more realistic track with added ties, ballast, etc.

The track plan is simple, an O27 oval combined with a figure eight on a 3x6’ base. This offers loop running, figure eight running, and the ability to turn the train and loop run in the opposite direction…

I too, really like the 3/16" 8-wheel litho cars. Great memories of my hand-me-down Marx 999 set with a NYC box car, black low side gondola, possibly another car (tank?), and the NYC caboose. That little set ran many miles during my brief ownership. (2 years? Gave it to my younger cousin shortly after receiving my Lindberg Lines HO set for Christmas 1962.)

I think the 3/16" 8-wheel litho cars are nicely proportioned and would look GREAT behind a 333!

They look really good with a scale type backdrop behind them. Here's a pic of some 3/16" cars I posed in front of the urban backdrop I have in place on this bench work. They look pretty good, don't they?
