Hello, and welcome once again to Midweek Photos.  I am a bit late to post this, after dinner time, but here are some photos as promised last week to remind you why we love the Real World of trains.

A week ago Saturday, June 4,  I was on the chase of Norfolk & Western 611 through the hills of Virginia.  After the excursion was done, I had the chance to view this 4-8-4 on display at the Manassas Train Festival near the tracks.

It was a nice crowd, and from what I hear, it would be a nice sized crowd without No. 611 there, too.DSC_1942

During the festival, Virginia Railway Express offered short trips on the trains for a no cost or low fee.  I did not look into it.

They did pose their train next to 611 periodically, too.  The Fest ended in mid afternoon, so my friends and I went to get a bite to eat.

Later in the evening, I caught this beautiful view of the Manassas station.  Weather at the time was perfect. More photos coming.  Get your contributions ready to add to the mix.

Sunday came, and another chance to go on the chase.  This is actually a good line to chase the train, even though the train hauls out at 40 MPH on average. There train pulls into the station again.  Photo from the parking garage.

Backing onto the wye to take the B Line to Front Royal.

Our first stop was at Rectortown. We hoped this antebellum freight station would make a nice front for the train to pass behind.

Except for the blue tarp, it looks good to me.

Rolling through Delaplane again.

I might say this is my favorite, if not best, photo of the weekend.  It has a 20th Century Limited-type look to it.  Yet all N&W at the same time.  This is near Linden.

Still more to come.

The next stop was Markham, VA where we encountered this neat old building. It is well cared for, but I don't know if it is in use as a produce distributor.

I made a new friend while waiting for the train to arrive.

She waited patiently for the train to arrive, but a cat has only so much time to devote.  Now comes the train.

My last batch of photos.  This is coming into an s-curve near Manassas.  I forget the name of the location.

Pure power in this engine.

This car, dome Stampede Pass, would be my ride on the afternoon excursion on June 5..

Nice to catch signals in use on the mainline.  Here she is rolling into town.

Then, after pulling through the wye again, 611 comes to the station before preparation for the 2:00 excursion.  This was a great run, and a great weekend in Virginia.  I really enjoyed it.

See you next week.

The Reading & Northern has restored a pair of Budd RDC's (9166 and 9168) for excursions from Pottsville, PA. The trip down the former Reading Main Line to North Reading Yard (and interchange with the NS) included tours of offices and shops at Port Clinton.RBM&NRDCTripsRDCsPtsvlSta 001RDCsPtsvlSta 004RDCsPtsvlSta 005

Both RDC's have plush tan seats and murals on the ceiling by an artist from Kempton, PA.

Last Saturday, we took a friend who hadn't visited New York City in several decades to see the sights, most notably the shopping experiences along Canal Street and, at the opposite end of the spectrum, the upscale shops of 5th and Madison Avenues in the 50s.

As should be expected of any self-respecting train guy, we got around town by subway. Posted below are some of my images documenting the variety of equipment still to be found on the various routes. We see R62s on a downtown 3 train, R142s on an uptown 2, R160s on an uptown F and good old R46s coming and going on an uptown R train.

I've also included several views of station facility vignettes. These include a mural of a vintage vision of futuristic train travel gracing the Times Square 42nd Street station, signage at Canal Street which still features Chinese symbols and a family of penguins at 59/60th Streets and 5th Avenue in deference to the nearby Central Park Zoo. The New York City subway is truly an amazing experience. I hope you enjoy your virtual trip

Bob
