Welcome back my friends, to another installation of Midweek Photos.  Last week's thread was a good one, with a lot of participation.  Thank you to all who added their part.  Time to get involved once more.  This past weekend, Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, PA along with a partner agency, the Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority,  sponsored their annual Heritage Explorer train to go to a fair in Carbondale, PA.  The heritage of the line is the Delaware & Hudson RR.

Boarding for the train is at Steamtown's regular platform.

For the last several years, these ladies from the early 1900s have traveled the Explorer.  I try to snap their picture every year.

Power for the train this time was ALCO C425 no 2457, which began life on the Spokane Portland & Seattle RR.  This is her second year in the "corporate colors" of the Delaware Lackawanna. We see the train pushing the coaches to the run-around location, which is about 2 miles south of the downtown of Carbondale.

While in town, I took a walk over to Gravity Park, one of the planes of the D&H Gravity Railroad.

This monument, with a light, even, is dedicated to the workers who founded one of the first railroads in the US.

100 years after the gravity trains were replaced by steam power, this historic marker was added to the park.

In 1995, the City of Carbondale built this platform in the general location of the D&H passenger station. Many ties are being replaced on the route.  Some were even changed out in the Scranton portion of the line while this train was in Carbondale.  We passed the equipment along the way.

Once again, another fun, relaxing trip is complete.  So is my portion of the thread.

Time for you to add your photos.  We like all types of railroading, so please show us what ya got!  Have a good weekend.

Sunday, October 20, was an incredible morning in the Cumberland Valley, about 70 degrees, blue skies, and low humidity. I set off fairly early towards the closest NS mainline, the Harrisburg-Hagerstown line, which is a combination of former RDG and PRR routes.

Unfortunately, I missed the VIRGINIAN Heritage unit on an eastbound at daybreak, 2 hours later, the railroad was still all red signals and radio silent. I wandered about for about 3 hours, seeing nothing on NS, and gave it up before noon to get lunch at JERSEY MIKE's subs.

Photo tally:
1 dead train; CSX 015 stacker was caught on the law at New Franklin,PA. 1 mile short of the yard at Chambersburg. A supervisor with a MOW hy-rail pickup was enroute to pick up this crew. The crew was hoping  a relief crew would show up before anyone complained about the blocked crossing at the rear of this train.
This doesn't seem like "precision railroading"
1 piece of abandoned trackage; the east end of the 1983 abandoned branch from  Marion,PA., to Mercersburg,PA. and Richmond Furnace,PA. This was a PRR line, then PC,CR and then a shortline. About a mile of rail remains in and 1/4 mile of this is still used by NS for MOW equipment.
1 relic of a lost RR; not sure when this trailer showed up at the local tire dealer in Emmitsburg, MD., but here is a Rock relic, 35 years after the line's passing. Yes, I know it's very bad lighting...

On Sunday I took my son to ride the 1225 at the Howell Mellon Festival.  We had a great time.  We chased the 10am train, rode the noon train, and chased the 2pm train!

I was able to grab one photo that I have been trying to get for awhile.  The 1225 from above.  Usually she only passes under a bridge in Ithica or on US 127.   I haven't been able to chase the last few trips she has gone under them.  Well there is the M59 overpass in Howell and we set up our 1st shot there!

Overall we had a blast and can not wait until she is out again in October!

Here is some video and photos of our day!
