Back in May, I had the chance to visit one of the oldest theme parks in America... Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, CA.

DSC_0822

It is home to an authentic 3-foot gauge steam locomotive.  Rio Grande Southern 2-8-0 no. 41. The cowboys close off the walkway several times a day to let her pass the tourist while she leaves the depot.

The gold mining ghost town theme is used throughout the park, even among the high speed thrill rides.

Neat old cars on the train include this caboose, and a cattle car converted to passenger use.

The station is authentic, too.

As if the real train experience wasn't enough, they also operate this amusement park style train built by Crown Amusements

Thanks to all who are posting photos, or even expanding on the Real Trains forum with other days of the week to showcase their own photos.

Please post any of your scenes here, and enjoy your week.

Well, Tim likes to photo old trains with a new camera.  I've been photo'ing new trains with an old camera!  I guess either way, it works.  First shot was made with my 1951 Rolleiflex shooting ISO 400 Portra film.  Train is a s/b on the BNSF Marshall Sub in Sioux Center, IA.  Second shot was taken about 40 minutes north, near Manley, MN using same camera & flash set up.  Final photo was taken with the Rolleiflex and HP5 of a DME hopper near Cavour, SD.  There had been a derailment of a bunch of hopper cars full of wheat.  This hopper really got crunched.  OK, one more photo from the derailment scene.  I love to find derailments--it gives me a chance to take photos that are more abstract.
