Do I have to purchase the remote and a TIU, or can I get away with a TIU and a Wifi Unit?

If you use the current DCS App, instead of a remote, with a TIU and WIU, you will only be able to use DCS engine operation features and functions. You will not be able to use lashup or record/playback, or operate accessories or switch tracks, as well as other features and functions.
Those features and functions will not be available in the DCS App until the Premium version is released, sometime later this year.
IMO, for any command system you buy, be it DCS or Legacy, you should have at least one of the system remotes.
I am inclined to agree with GRJ. If I want to play with gadgets, I may use my WIU. If I want to run trains, I ALWAYS use the remote(s).

Barry, does this mean you will be updating your book "sometime later this year"?
At this point in time just use the WIFI with a TIU to control engines. You do not actually need an AIU for controlling turnouts and blocks if you have simple control boxes for manual control. Later when the PRO version of the WIFI is available then add the AIU.
See some examples of very basic control boxes that I have built. These boxes can be used along side an AIU system to perform turnout and block control.

I agree with GRJ and RJR above. I think you should have one remote for your DCS system (same for your Legacy system, if you have one).

Perhaps, something like that...
