I enjoy listening to model locomotive startup and shutdown sounds, although I don’t often hear them on Forum videos. So, I’m opening this thread for posting images and sounds of your model locomotives during startup and shutdown, but please post videos only of your model locomotives – no real engines. I will start with short videos of three locomotives.

The first is my MTH Premier New Haven Railroad ALCO DL-109 #0719 with PS-2. I have enjoyed listening to this locomotive for almost twenty years. It sounds to me like it has a noisy valve as it gathers itself up and gets going. This locomotive had two 539T engines with 1000 HP each

.

Next is a recording of my MTH Premier New Haven Railroad ALCO S-2 #0615 with PS-3. This locomotive had one 539T engine with 1000 HP. Same engine as the New Haven DL-109.

Third is an MTH Premier EMD GP38-2 locomotive with PS-3, Providence & Worcester #2007. It had a turbocharged EMD 645E engine with 2000 HP. P&W #2006 used to hang out in the motor storage area in New Haven. I used to hear it running, but not on startup…

By the way, the transformer fan is audible as background noise in my videos.

Not that there seems to be much interest in startup/shutdown sounds, but here are two videos that play the excellent startup and shutdown sounds of my MTH Premier New York Central GP9 #6001 diesel locomotive with PS-3. They’re shaky because I have to hold the camera and start/stop the video with one hand while operating the transformer throttle with the other. The GP9s were powered by an EMD 567C engine that produced 1750 horsepower.
