I subscribe to his videos. It is a permanent outdoor in Europe. One loop is Gauge 1 and the other is multi-gauge to support O gauge. The road bed is a series of custom made metal trays on metal posts with gravel ballast. This one appears to be made from painted pressure-treated lumber.
There's another guy who built a very elaborate Gauge 1 backyard layout on redwood piers. He even built "Step-overs" for access to the back yard. My kind of layout.
The concepts are inspiring and would work for O gauge/O scale, but suitable track is the big issue over the long term.
