hey guys I have an early MPC 4-4-2 (PRR Broadway limited) given to by my grand dad. He picked it up at auction. When running it makes a squealing/grinding sound. I’m not really sure how to describe it. I oiled the armature shaft on the opposite of the brushes. I’m not sure what I can do now. Any and all suggestions are welcome. Thanks

Ok I’ll try that. I think I’m going to the local shop tomorrow I’ll pick up some grease
Oil both ends of the armature, all four axle bushings, and all idler shafts(you may need a needle oiler for this). Very light on the gear grease - they really don't need to be smeared up with grease. These are very simple engines and they run forever.
I know they run forever my dad still has his Broadway limited set my grand dad got him when it was first offered, my uncle got the capital limited. Both of them have the presidential campaign cars too. He got it out last year when he put up a new platform at his place for my daughter. I still fired right up for him.
The plan is to get this running good then tackle the board for the mighty SOS.
I was going to give it to him for parts but I’m being greedy and keeping it for me
What Rob said. Also before you run it again, open up the tender and put a new piece of foam (or double-sided foam tape) under the Sound of Steam circuit board. The original foam insulation degrades over time, and if the bottom of the circuit board touches the grounded metal tender frame, it may short out and be destroyed!
These were nice looking locos but in my experience, not really good runners. One of these days I'll get back to the project of re-motoring one with the guts of a 520 boxcab. Then it might run almost as well as a prewar 1664 remotored with the chassis of a 1656.
I took the shell off the tender already. I’m pretty sure the board might be fried. The foam is pretty much gone I had asked about the board in a different post. Replacing the capacitors when I get the engine going. It’s not a big deal if it works, but it don’t hurt to try
Use Lucas Oil’s Red n Tacky for grease. It won’t turn to glue.
