@Apples55  was kind enough to send me a CARE package:

GEDC1194

The star attraction,  however,  was a "Sounds of Steam"  SP Daylight 4-8-4.   Now, the first thing you're supposed to do with an "SoS" loco, even before you operate the loco, is to pop open the tender and check the electronics.    Here's why:

GEDC1178

The rotted sponge is removed and replaced with 3M mounting squares.

GEDC1179

This truck sideframe was slightly warped.  I bent it back to shape with a pair of needlenose pliers.

GEDC1180

Threading the SoS cable through the tender shell is a tricky affair owing to the short length of the lead.

GEDC1181

With the tender sorted, time to have a look at the loco:

The inner motor bearing had a dry squeak,  so off comes the shell:

GEDC1184

The motor is removed and oiled.

GEDC1185

Before buttoning things down,  a brief operational test.

GEDC1186

Fortescue J.  Gi-raffe supervises the cable connection.

GEDC1187

The Sounds of Steam and the whistle work just fine!

Back on the workbench to check the smoke generator.

GEDC1191

Seems to be working somewhat,  but I may need to do a teardown at a later date.

All buttoned down and ready for action!

GEDC1192

Thanks again,  Paul!

You are a braver man than I, Gunga Din... I would never open up an engine, much less take one apart - with my luck and advanced level of techno-peasantry, I would end up with a bunch of extra pieces when I got things back together. And I am not sure what I would have done if I found that electronic hair ball in the tender!!!

Happy to see it running again, even if the MIGHTY sound of steam leaves something to be desired. Though maybe you should put one of those boards in the Geep... keep Norma BK off the tracks (that, or sharpen the couplers).

As for the smoke, I am not a smoker, so other than a possible test run, the Daylight never smoked. The last time I used smoke regularly was in my first postwar 2-6-4 steamer, and that used the good old smell-less pellets (I still have some in their original bottle).

And remember... you PROMISED no defilement of the Daylight - I’m holding you to that.

P.S. Looks like you have put a good bit of work into the engines already... so do I qualify for a civic award from your local municipality for keeping you and the menagerie off the streets???

Enjoy!!!

When in doubt, punt.

I'm sure the city fathers will vote you a certificate of appreciation...

Update:  Since I have now found myself, if not wealthy, at least in possession of a penny or two to rub together, I've fulfilled one of my promises to myself.  After some very careful shopping on eBay,  I've managed to put together an eight-car Daylight consist of RailKing streamlined cars (baggage, 3 coaches, diner, Vista Dome, Pullman and observation) to delight the kids at the J Reilly McCarren Transportation Museum!   This consist will go into action there next year, after I update the layout there a bit...

Those cars look like a pretty good match for the engine - good catch

It still amazes me that Mighty SOS was a quantum leap over the PW steamers!!! Have to agree with Joe - the kids are going to love it. I hope the museum layout is a bit bigger than your setup... that is one long train.

The museum layout is about 12' x 4, so, yes, it is considerably longer.  And thanks!    Couldn't have done it without you!
