I have rebuild a couple of 8030-100 motors. Utilizing a bronze worm gear, metal drive gear and 2 delron pinions.

I would have liked to use metal pinions. But, the plastic collector insert , wedged between the steel plates on the motor, serve multi - purposes. The collector setup, pinion studs and axle bearing on one side of the motor.

I was thinking of drilling through the plastic pinion studs and replacing with sintered/metal ones. But, have been unable to find a one that will work size wise. I would also like to drill the insert on the side where the plastic serves as the axle bearings and insert normal bearing like the opposite side.

There other issue is the metal gears against the steel swaged frame. I believe that this is a no-no. But, believe that

lionel once had a small plastic spacer washer between gear and frame.. on one of their engines....

Any Ideas?

What will you achieve by replacing the plastic gears with metal ones?

On one 8030 motor I wanted to rebuild there was a lot of play at the plastic spur gears. When I got it apart, it wasn't the gears that were worn. It was the posts on which they rotated. I scrapped the motor.
