Dear List,

Just received my MTH Crocodile after a 2 year wait. When I removed the loco from the box it appears to be a wait that was worth it. I was quite surprised to see the small size of the loco in comparison to a PRR GG-1.

I posted some photos to illustrate the size difference.

I am hoping some of our foreign modelers will chime in with their thoughts about this loco and hopefully offer advise on what current rolling stock offerings (MTH,LENZ,etc) that would be appropriate to place behind this beauty.

My vote for the next MTH foreign loco- DR/DB Kreigslok 2-10-0

Thanks in advance on your responses. John P.Dunn Sr.

@John...Glad that you finally received and enjoy the Crocodile...Yes MTH did a good rendition of the engine, there are a few point who could have be done better, but over all it's a solid model. Operation is smooth and quiet, good sound (except for that freaking bell !!!!) and nice lighting effect.

Now, seem everybody always compare the Croc and GG1 in size, well the Croc was a much smaller locomotive with a lenght of 19.46 meters (63.85 ft) compared to the 24.25 meters (79.6 ft) of the GG1. I don't have the height of the GG1, but the croc was pretty low too at 3.75 meters (12.32 ft) high to the rooftop, 4.5 meters (14.75 ft) to the pantograph when lowered.

The MTH swiss K2 boxcars are a great match to run with the croc, the beer reefer are OK too, even so they were mostly used for local transport and not for the North-South  through the Gotthard traffic.

Most Lenz offering are a good match too (with reservation) and Brawa is coming out (think they are planned for the 1st quater of 2014) with some terrific non-mechanical reefer SBB/FS of the Migros, who were used to bring produce from Italy.

And if you're ready to spend $1000.- +, per car, there are some nice offering from the small series manufacturer.

Funny, your pictures remind me of the one I posted a while back....oopss these are the 3rails version...!!!!

Sincerely,

Are they (MTH) sending you a replacement hatch, Dave?  I certainly hope so.  Is it one of those hatches held on by small magnets?

Very interesting.

The MTH Website has listed the locomotive any where from minimum curve of 042 to 072. Now on the box flag it says 054 and in the April, 2013 issue of Classic Toy Trains the review of the locomotive it says 042. Well the only way to find out is for someone like me to try running it. I have Fast Track with 048 curves. Will try the locomotive this week coming and will post the results here.

I also purchased two of the Sunset Models FL9s. Have to remove the front coupler in order to run it on 048. Will report back on this one also.
