On my layout I have 3 MTH DCS TIU's and for a long time (over 2 years) I have had the the MTH DCS Wi-Fi as part of the layout, one Wi-Fi for each TIU.  It worked great.

Recently one of the Wi-Fi units (wifi1) is not turning on fully.  When power is applied to the TIU, the PWR button lights up remains on, the LAN light comes on for about 10 seconds and then goes off.  No other lights come on or remain on.

In contrast one of the other units (wifi2) power is applied to the TIU, the PWR button lights up remains on, the LAN light comes on for about 10 seconds then goes off and the WPS light begins flashing for about 10 seconds then the TIU light comes on and stays on.  It is ready. Wifi2 works fine.

I moved wifi2 to the first TIU and it started up just fine.  I moved wifi1 to second TIU 2 and had the same issue, so i don't think its a TIU, or the cables.

When this problem first started I was able to unplug the power to wifi1 plug it back in and after 4-5 attempts it started up, and worked, until I turned the power off and it was then back to square one.

I fiddled around with this for about an hour last night and could not get wifi1 to come on.

I will try a few more times but then I have the dilemma of leaving the TIU and WiFi on, which doesn't seem to be the wisest idea.

If anyone has any ideas that would be appreciated, or if any hobby shop has one in stock, I'd gladly buy it.

Update as of March 1.

After unplugging in and plugging the Wi-Fi tonight (the power cord to the Wi-Fi), I got it to come on and boot up fully.  Literally 15 times, but it worked – go figure.  Murphy's law?

The TIU is connected into power strip with a surge protector.  The WI-Fi is plugged into the TIU.

The TIU is getting no track power.  My two ZW-Ls are on a different power strip.

I don’t like the idea of leaving the power on but – is there a big downside I am not thinking about????

Update as of November 1.

After my basement was repaired from the flood this summer, I returned in earnest to the trains.  While it is supposed to be in the 70s the next few days winter is looming around the corner in Chicago, I am certain.  I spent 45 minutes on Sunday unplugging and plugging in the Wi-Fi to no avail.  I will give it another try later today.

I am also trying to determine what plan B looks like:

  • Getting a stand alone WiFi unit seems to be impractical - ebay had one for $800.
  • I am not sure when the DCS TIU WiFi is coming out.  Hopefully soon
  • ???? other thoughts
