I have been anxiously awaiting the release of this German Steamer for almost 2 years.

Back in 1979-80 I was an exchange student in both East and West Germany.

While in the DDR(East Germany) I rode on passenger trains pulled by this awesome steamer.

At the time I didn't know how fortunate I was to be riding on trains pulled by this steamer.

Imagine my surprise when MTH announces a release of this steamer. My German friends are all

excited to get their hands on this locomotive when it gets released. Now I find my Italian cousins

know about it too!!

Anyway it looks like February is the release date but rumors are that it will be later.

I have questions for those that know

1)  there are 4 choices to choose from, the 2 I would be interested in are the DB-BR44 Era lllb or Era lV

2) what's the difference between Hi-Rail Wheels and Fine Scale Wheels?

3) we have fas-trac 0-36 and 0-48 will this locomotive be compatable?

Any help would be appreciated

Hi-Rail wheels are the typical wheels for 3-rail 0 gauge trains, with deep flanges. If you are using Fastrack, that's the kind of flanges you want. Fine Scale wheels have a scale profile. The flanges are shallow and work well only on scale type track.

MTH rates this locomotive for 0-54 minimum curve. I am surprised that it is even rated for 0-54; I would have guessed 0-72. It is a very long locomotive with 10 driving wheels and I would consider it unlikely that it would run on 0-48, although it might work. I suspect if it did run on 0-48, it would slow down badly in curves because the flanges would drag. 0-36 is out of the question.

As said previously by S.H., Hi-Rail is for 3 rail track and Fine Scale is for 2 rail scale track. If you re-work your track to O-72 you should be good for running anything made for 3 rail track so far to present times.

I don't know much about the MTH European trains, or the real European trains themselves, so can't help there.

According to the Busch [ the MTH dealer for Germany etc ] website:
The Epoch 3 model = circa 1960 appearance

 The Epoch 4 = circa 1970

The only difference mentioned by Busch is that the later version has computer numbering [ eg, 044 xxx - x ].  If there will be other differences, I imagine we'll have to wait for the models for the definitive answer.

Hope that helps.

I called MTH to ask the question and the person in the sales dept didn't know as she said these engines are mostly for a European market.

That being said

I hope they have the coupler anyway for us "Yanks" it still would be great to hook up our American RR or Passenger cars to these engines!!

My "hunch" about MTH is I think they will!!!

I don't know about the German 2-10-0, but the three MTH Euro locomotives I own all have operating Proto-Couplers. However, all the Euro rolling stock has non-operating couplers. You can substitute European-style couplers for the dummy Lionel-type couplers, which I have chosen not to do because it's too much work, both to make the change and then to couple and uncouple the cars when setting up.
