So i have a very annoying problem. I have this Mth Railking L3 Mohawk. My dad bought me this train for Christmas when i was a little guy. I have had it for about 5 years now, and through the years he has bought me a ton of legacy engines. so it does not get much running time. I stuck it on the track and the sound was very this very scratchy static sound. I replaced the battery and it still sounds bad. Any ideas?

Does your engine have an item number. Anyone who might help you will want to know what system is in it.

This is a 5 volt PS2 engine. Sounds like the speaker in the tender has gone bad assuming everything else on the engine is working okay.
From the looks of it, the PS2 board is in the engine and the tender is pretty accessible which should make replacing the speaker fairly easy. You'll need a 16 ohm speaker.
RJ,
That engine has a 5 volt PS2 board. The symptoms that you're experiencing are most likely caused by the deterioration of the engine's 16 ohm speaker, which is in the tender.
A fair number of PS2 engines with 5 volt boards had speakers that tended to deteriorate with age. The result would be lowered volume and "staticy" sounds, particularly during cab chatter. MTH sells replacement 16 ohm speakers that do not suffer from this problem.
If you have moderate soldering skills you should have little difficulty replacing the speaker yourself.

Thank you to everyone who helped me out with this. I took a RTR engine ripped the speaker out of it and put it in the mohawk. It sounds so pretty now, it brings me back to christmas morning. Thanks again
