I have a older 2-8-0 Consolidation I bought from someone on the forum that has a BCR so the battery is not installed.  It is the PS2 3V electronics board.  I added a LED headlight and a back up light with an upgraded speaker with an enclosure.  The locomotive seemed to work fine on my roller test stand and then on my test layout.

Recently when I go to speed step 1 on the DCS controller the speed seems to take off and on the test layout is very jerky.  I cleaned all of the wheels, rollers, etc. and there was a lot of dirt build up.   However the performance did not change.  I did a feature and a factory reset without any performance change as well.

My suspicion is the motor flywheel electronics stopped working so the motor controller continues to apply voltage.  Does this seem like a reasonable root cause?  I am going to confirm later today with a DMM/scope.

What other visual or measurements can I take to confirm the issue?  Are these boards available or repairable?

Thanks,  Bill

Thanks John. I checked the tach wires to see if they were shorted to the chassis and they are isolated.

I saw the comparator board aux board on the side in the tender.  It visually looks OK.

On the rear of the top board in the tender I found an 8 pin part with FD408 4420A on the top near the two pin red/black harness connection.  I did a part number search without any success.  Is this the part?  I've attached a picture with it marked.  Do you have a replacement part number?  Do these fail without any visual evidence?

On the tach board I measured between the gray and blue wires I was expecting to see 5V.  I am measuring -0.8V.  I saw some older posts about these parts also failing.  I am assuming the the 5V supply is then returned thru the middle wire to show the tachometer signal.  Does the op amp you reference supply this part?

Is there a reference schematic I can look at?

Bill
