Below are possibilities for special runs .  SO far I have only have requests for about 6 pieces of each, which isnt enough to go forward...  You can pre-order with no deposit (If u already put a deposit on the P&W, but we cant do it, u will get a refund).  I'll have to make a decision within a few days.

Im leaning toward the D&M, cause new to nothing has been done in D&M before.    Lots of P&W has been done (including this RS-3 in  2012), and GB&W has been done in RS-27's , which are cool.    I would do the D&M in the scheme as pictured,.  I think its a lot nicer than the light gray and black.  Unless everyone says they want the light gray and black....

All import appreciated.

That was quick, I stand corrected.     I read the MTH data sheet on its history. Its easier for me to justify a few "new" road names on my layout if they fall into the "switcher" category as opposed to the big mainline engines.  At least there is a historic connection with the Grand Trunk and Soo Line.  Should be interesting working this engine into the roster. Now that I am living in Michigan I figured this was a good opportunity to add a Michigan Railroad name. Beth you timing is impeccable!

Great Northern.  WRONG NUMBER

I CALLED MTH this morning. I absolutely hate their phone call in system because it is not user friendly. I left a message on the sales phone. I wanted to inform them that Great Northern did in fact have RS3s. They had 4 of them. None of them were numbered the same number as the picture on the model that is being displayed.

The accurate Numbers are: 182, 183, 184 and 185.

I'm not a rivet counter. I realize and understand that different manufacturers come out with different kinds of models and some won't have a certain hatch or event or fan roof or horn will be in a different place or something. All of that is not that big of an issue. However, it is just as easy to put on the correct number as it is the incorrect number.  I wish that they would take the time to find out because in these days in times it is incredibly easy with the Internet.

Dear MTH: If you see this on here, please, please at least use the correct number on your new release. Thank you very much!

Relax.....These are RS-3's not RS-1's.    GN 182 thru GN 185 were RS-1's.   GN 229 is correct for an RS-3.  229 is also the one that is on display in GN colors at Schenectady, NY

Here is a small clip from the official all-time GN locomotive roster.  It shows only 4 RS3s.

Just because an engine is on display does not mean it bears the correct number.  That engine may never have been on the Great Northern. Of the four they had, 3 were scrapped years and years ago.  What is the chance that that is the ONE?

PS:  If this sounds argumentative, not my intention.  However, I will continue to look for documented official evidence that the number used on the model and display was used on a RS3.  The official roster has had errors before.

Lastly, I would hope that this run be done with an official documented numbered, because it would be incredibly simple to just do that knowing that GN used 182 to 185.

Very interesting. A quick internet search led me to this website that says the GN did have a RS3 with the number 229.  It states that the former GN RS3 229 is on display in New York. It also states that the GN did not use the numbers 182, 183, 184 and 185 for RS3s.

http://www.greatnorthernempire...NDieselRosterRS3.htm

I would think that 229 would sell more units as I think most enthusiasts would like a model of the last one that exists over one that got scrapped.

I also found that Atlas did the GN RS3 229 in HO so they obviously think it is a good number and Atlas did GN RS3 230 in N scale so once again they feel it is a correct number and we all know that in the smaller scales stuff like this matters a lot more.

Here is a pic of the RS3 in New York: It looks really great!

@John C., you are mixing the GN class number with the Alco model number. Look at the roster shown in your photo. On the left side it says, "Class RS-1." Scan to the right along the same line and you'll see, "Alco-GE Model RS1."

The Alco RS-3 was Great Nothern class RS-5. You can see that all here on the Great Nothern Empire website. (The Great Northern Railway Society refers people to GNE site for locomotive rosters.) I'll bet that if you look up Class RS-5 in your official all-time GN locomotive roster, you'll see #229 among the thirteen Alco RS-3s.
