I have two 7 car sets of Scale MTH heavy weight (N&W and Blue Comet) from around 1998.  Both of the five car sets appear very bright (bulbs) compared to both of the two car add on sets, almost like they don't match when in the same trains.  I prefer the dimmer version in the add on sets.

Does any one know if this is just bulb voltage issue or are the cars actually wired differently.  If it is just bulb voltage, what voltage bulb should I be purchasing?  Is MTH only one that carries these or are there better suppliers to buy these in bulk (I need 10 cars worth)?

Thanks

You should probably put 18 volt bulbs in the cars. Then you can run in command mode all day and not burn them out.

You might try doing one car first, to see if that works. If they are still too bright, try 24 volt bulbs. When you find the bulbs that work for you, then you can order a batch and do all the cars.

OR... you can open up one of the cars whose brightness is the way you like it and see what bulbs are in it.

Replacing incandescent bulbs in my MTH aluminum cars having silhouettes in the windows.

I have both 60 foot and 70 foot scale length MTH aluminum cars.

I have pulled the "window silhouettes" and incandescent bulbs from all my aluminum passenger cars (both 60 foot and 70 foot models).

The 70 foot cars will have new custom made interiors and complete overhead lighting and added underframe detail. The shorter cars will just have "tinted" windows but no lighting or interiors.

I added a "ceiling" and overhead LEDs to each 70 foot car. The ceiling is a single 3/32 wood strip which fits perfectly in the casting along the inside roof line. I replaced the "windows" with .060 clear plastic sheet cut to exact size. These fit perfectly in the aluminum casting without the need to glue in place.

I modify all the passenger cars with LED lighting.  The parts to convert a car are only around $3/ea, and the biggest part of the job is taking the car apart and putting it back together.

There are many threads on LED lighting in passenger cars here.  Here are a few...
