Hi GUYZ,

I know this has been discussed here on the forum but was wondering why my MTH Reading & Northern, SD40-2 Diesel Engine With Proto-Sound 3.0 MTH no. 20-20581-1 will come up in conventional mode only on one of my tracks?  I am running 3 tracks all homerun wired, powered by three 180 watt Lionel Bricks, using Fasttrack.  My DCS remote and TIU are Ver.5.0.  I have the DCS in the AON position so all tracks come up powered and ready to go.  If I put any other PS3 or PS 2 on the first Fixed 1 track they all come up in Command mode only this engine comes up in conventional mode.  I did a reset of the engine and it didn't help.  I can shut it down and restart with the remote and then it will be in Command.  It does run great and sounds wonderful, just this glitch.   Any thoughts on this?  Thanks for your time.

MY experience is if its PS3 its going to miss the watchdog signal sooner or later. My PS2 always behave. To help minimize missing the signal, #1 Make sure you have good clean ground to all locomotive wheels and both outside rails of track. Especially 2/3 rail locomotives. Then start up locomotive as soon as possible.

Please know that we have made significant improvements in how the watchdog is handled in the latest versions of DCS code.  Be sure to update your TIU to ver 6.1 if you aren't already there and see if that helps.

Also, there was some engine code in diesels that has an intermittent issue with starting up in conventional.  It was mostly seen in lash ups but, maybe you should try updating the engine DSP code.  Contact our service dept and they can tell you where to get the code.

From my recent experience, this upgrade has helped greatly.  Our PS3 Reading SD-70 ACE MTH 20-20809-1 would sit on unpowered track.  When power was applied it would just take off screaming at 18 Volts.

We had DCS 5.0.  After I upgraded to DCS6.1, the engine now behaves at it should.

Have Fun!

Ron
