I don't have a particular favorite diesel, but they must be painted green and yellow.
Have probably shown this before, but what the heck...
...'twas my first 2 rail O scale loco.
Have used it as a test bed for different motors (currently has a Pittman) and was an initial experiment in O scale decals. MEC 671 was an F3, but this F9 runs really well (after replacing the split axle gears, of course...)

My favorite diesel was a American Flyer C. and O. Geep with ringing bell.
Shovel-nosed Burlington Zephyrs.
Any of my K-LineSanta Fe or MOPAC ALCO FA's. Solid, hardy, and easy to maintain.
As for post war, I love the Fairbanks Morse but for the Modern Era I prefer the SD 70ACE
Lionel 230 C&O alco, it was my first Lionel, and she's still the pride of the fleet, she's not the most powerful, or flashy, or anything like that, but she always been, and always will be, my pride and joy, it's probably the reason why I like the "Cheapie" (stripped down) alcos so much.

MTH Alco DL-109, custom proper GM&O headlight, repaint, GM&O decals and "hand-made" early-style GM&O wings. Nobody makes this decal; I literally pieced the nose emblem together from aluminum stripes and lettering. Gah!
Due for an ERR Cruise Commander/Alco RS.
