Thanks Sinclair. The layout is two lines. The upper one is a big rectangle and the grades are the same up and down of about 2 1/2%. If I set just one car on the grade it will sit there until I give it a slight push. I've had over 15 cars behind the engine and it pulls then no problem. On the lower line I tried a dog bone arrangement where the train goes back on the same line thru a switch but the switches are just not reliable enough and was always derailing so I took the switches out and ran two tracks parallel to each other with a loop at each end. The curves on the upper level are 072 but on the lower level they are 031. I just couldn't go any bigger without sticking out into the room to much.

Is that a K-line Allegheny?  I ask because I have one too, and if it can pull that kind of train on that grade, that's great to hear.
