Hi all,

I've got a couple of locomotives needing some grease: a K-line S-2 (Illinois Central, if you're curious), and a Lionel NW2 (Mopar, from a set released in 1994). From what I've read here, quite a few people recommend Red N Tacky general purpose grease. I don't have any of that on hand, but I do have a small tub of some Mystik general purpose grease lying around (No. 2, JT6. Green tub) from a non-railroad related project. As far as I can tell from reading the package, it's essentially the same thing (aside from the color). Am I right on this? Would it be safe to use on my locos?

Also, do I need to grease/lube anything internally that I can't see without taking these two apart?

Thanks!

I have used labells  exclusively for about 30 years it is made for model railroading, the have products for multiple uses on trains, and is PLASTIC COMPATIBLE NO PETROLEUM ADDITIVES WHICH IS HARMFUL TO PLASTICK . Manufactures produce oil & grease for specific applications , based on the conditions they will be exposed to , there is no one use for all, also read the warning label ,i use lucas marine grade for my boat trailer bearings .Great stuff for trailer bearings, use on my trains i think not.In my opinion of all the hoby lubes out there ,i think labells out performs all of them, and i dont worry about causing damage to my expensive trains . this is just my opinion , use what ever you so desire. techman

The Labelle 106 should be available at your LHS, if you have one, as should the MTH Lube kits. Otherwise you can get it from one of the forum sponsors or I think also from Labelle. The Red N Tacky #2 is available at Home Depot for around $5. That is for a full tube that is used in a grease gun (more than a lifetime supply). It looks the same as the grease MTH supplies in it's lube kits. Personally, I would stick with either of those two and not use something untested by the folks around here.

Some engines have a gear box with gears that you can't see from the bottom of the engine. You need to remove the cover from the gear box to grease them. They may all have this gear box, I have only been back in the hobby for a few years and there are a LOT of things I have not yet seen as some of the others here have. Maybe someone else more knowledgeable will also comment on the hidden items needing lubrication.
