Not as nice as Norms...
My complaint is with the LED leads, they are basically a scale 5" cable going up into the bottom of the class lamps to feed the LED. Lionel isn't the only one to spoil the looks of their smokebox fronts though, MTH and 3rd Rail are just as bad. On my heavy mods, I usually snuff the markers and class lamps and plug the lead holes. I'm not sure what I will do with this model yet. This and the Legacy Y3 I just got both suffer the same indignities to their smokebox fronts. I bought some fiber optic 'light pipe' to play with. Maybe drilling out the back of the class lamps and routing the fiber optic straight out could work. May try it on the Y3 first as that is the next project heading into the Northbrook shops.

Now that is a coal drag if I never saw one.
Raw video of club member Dave's LCCA Class A last Saturday morning:
What is a proper caboose for the pre and post war model? has anyone produced one? will Lionel? what about the aux tender?

The proper cab would be a CF, a CG or a CH. In 3 rail, only Weaver has made the CF and CG. They were brass models that sold for $250 at the time. Division Point (and maybe Kohs) made a 2R model. And Gloorcraft/Qualitycraft made a wood kit.
Anything else is fantasy.
3R Auxiliary tenders have been made by Lionel and MTH.
bit odd lionel didnt offer a caboose or aux tender with these---

The owner says the LCCA did not provide era information for this locomotive.

With the smooth pilot, 1943 on.

As stated above, 1943 on based on the pilot, however it is a fictional model since it has the large roller bearing rods but only 1238-1242 (the last five engines of the class) had roller bearings. They should have numbered it in that range if they wanted it to be prototypical, but perhaps there was some other reason for picking 1222 and the rods were chosen for aesthetics.
Norm, keep us up on the “light pipes”,
This is the 0.75mm stuff I got off Amazon. There were other diameters but this one seemed like it would fit lanterns, etc. I got to playing with it a little bit and it seems to be promising. Not sure when I will get to try it on one of my engines yet. Like I said, normally I don’t try to preserve the lit markers/class lights when de-cabling them. In this case though, I thought it might be nice to preserve the feature while cleaning up the looks of the smoke box front.

Thanks Norm; so, I take it that a light source has to be provided at one end?

I sure hope you'll make a Youtube video when you do. I'd be very interested in seeing how you get the job done.
