May 9, 2015 - LCCA at National Train Day for Autism in Kennesaw, GA (RECAP)

The Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History in cooperation with the Lionel Collectors Club of America hosted  a National Train Day Special Event  for Autism on Saturday, May 9, 2015. This was a fun and exciting day for hundreds of visitors who enjoyed running Lionel trains as well as bringing awareness to those who are living with or have been affected by autism.  LCCA member Dave Rogers represented the club at the LCCA table throughout the day.   Every member who stopped by received a special LCCA limited edition Special Events pin.   Thank you Dave for volunteering  and thanks to all of the LCCA members and their families for participating in this exciting, fun event.

The Museum (home of the famous “The General” Steam locomotive of the 1862 Great Locomotive Chase) located in Kennesaw GA had several Lionel LionChief remote controlled starter set layouts, including a Thomas the Train layout and Little Lionel battery operated sets, for children of different ages and needs to experience. These train sets were made possible by the Lionel Collectors Club of America (LCCA).  Other activities included a sensory friendly room with puzzles and activities and special showings of the Museum’s Great Locomotive Chase movie. Several fun and educational crafts were also available for children to enjoy. Staff and volunteers from Autism Speaks, the world’s leading autism science and advocacy organization, were present to assist during the event and offer information and local resources for families.

The LCCA thanks all of the members and families for participating in this fun and worthwhile event. Thank you to Museum Director, and  LCCA member, Dr. Richard Banz, Sara Wilson and the entire museum staff along with the Autism Speaks organization for hosting this Lionel train filled  special event.    We know everyone had a great time!
